Streep Says Evil Mother Role Not Based on Hillary
reuters.com ^ | 20 July 2004 | Larry Fine

Posted on 07/20/2004 6:08:10 PM PDT by Darlin'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - For weeks, the rumor mills have been working overtime to claim that Oscar winner Meryl Streep based her portrayal of the Machiavellian mom in the remake of "The Manchurian Candidate" on Hillary Clinton.

The rumors are not even remotely true, Streep told reporters over the weekend. But the actress added that she was imitating a person that no one has yet guessed.

Streep plays a U.S. senator intent on seeing her son become president, assuming the villainous role played by Angela Lansbury in the original 1962 political thriller. The remake from Paramount Pictures is slated to open on July 30.

Streep said she was "disturbed" by reports suggesting she had based her performance on the former first lady, now a Democratic U.S. senator for New York.

I don't know who she based it on, but there is one scene in the promo that has been shown on Fox. The scene is just a flash, but in it, Streep is standing on the right with her left side facing the camera. The woman you see is a dead ringer for Hillary. Each time I've seen it, I think how eerie it is.

Problem with basing the character on Hughes and Noonan is that both are warm and charming, and Noonan is very attractive.

How you gonna make mean out of that Sophie? Answer is you're not.

Streep knows her craft though, and so does her subconcious; if you want to bring a
page-bound queen of mean to life, infuse it with Hillary "I was named after Sir Edmund before Sir Edmund was known" Rodham's mannerisms and essence. Hillary was C@@t before C@@t was cool.

There was a time when I actually thought Streep was intelligent, insightful, charming and a good actress....

..but that was long ago in the 80's.

Since then, she truly began believing her own reviews...& her ego grew & grew!!
... and she has turned into a rather vicious, sniping, harridan....
... and I wouldn't buy or watch her stupid movies for all the tea in China!

The film was made in 1961. Following the Kennedy assassination the film was pulled from release and didn’t go into circulation again until the occasion of it’s 25th Anniversary in 1987. There the re-release publicity tried to make a big thing out of it having been banned - although this was overstated promotional rhetoric more than anything, the decision to pull it from release was studio sensitivity rather than any censorship decision, and the reason it had remained out of circulation was that Frank Sinatra had owned the rights and withheld them until he was paid owed percentage of the profits.

LOL. The character is so evil and the premise is so diabolical that it isn't much of a stretch to make the connection. Also, I think it pretty telltale that the rumors are out there but the movie hasn't been released to the "Hillary-hating" public yet. So, who is perpetuating the rumors ? Liberal Hollywood, the distributors and reviewers.

Maybe not. But the Angela Lansbury original role could have been a early doppelganger for Hillary.

Actually, after I saw the original one (with Frank Sinatra in the Denzel Washington role, Laurence Harvey in the role that was one of two combined for some pretty boy I never heard of to plane, and Angela Lansbury in the Hillary! role) I remember being struck by how much the Lansbury character was exactly like Hillary!

Of course, you couldn't expect the real Hillary to have her motorcade run over a traffic cop that was in her way like -- oops, that was Hillary, not the movie. I do get the two confused!

Streep plays a U.S. senator intent on seeing her son become president

Hillary has a son? I believe Streep actually --- for one Hillary only has a daughter and I doubt she really cares all that much about what Chelsea does in life --- Hillary only cares about her own self --- she is intent on becoming president herself --- the only reason she wanted her husband to be president is because she figured it would help her own chances --- that wouldn't be likely with Chelsea becoming president.

A U.S. Senator with a son isn't the point of comparison here. The similarity is in Streep's portrayal of the scheming, evil and powerful mother.

I wonder why she lists North East (most around here call it Millerton) NY as her address on one of these? I know she has a place in Salisbury, CT, but North East? That's news. The towns are about 5 miles apart.

I used to like this woman, especially after I did some work for her back in the 80s, but now, she's sounding like another demented commie beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeitch.

Was that also the case for "Suddenly"? another movie Sinatra made before the JFK assasination - where he plays a mob hired hitman about to assasinate the president in Texas with a high powered scope rifle?

Suddenly is uncannily prophetic on the subject of assassination. It's clear that the killer is doing it for the fame as well as the money, a theme that would crop up in later confessions of real-life killers or would-be killers. Perhaps the 1954 film was too prophetic; like Sinatra's Manchurian Candidate, this movie was pulled from circulation for years after the JFK assassination. According to Kitty Kelley's bio of Sinatra, Lee Harvey Oswald saw this film a few days before he took rifle in hand. Now in the public domain, Suddenly is generally available in cheap, scratchy prints.
