39: Actions planned for next operational period:
Provide structure protection as needed. Continue to construct and burn out containment lines. Mop-up on north and west flanks will continue. Continue to keep the fire south of Hwy 138, north of the Leibre fuel break, east of the Old Ridge and west of Forest Road #7N16.
40: Projected incident movement/spread during next operational period:
Under the influence of the current and expected weather & fire behavior, containment lines continue to be threatened. With the current resources, the west flanks have a medium potential of movement. Growth potential is extreme on the southeast flank and in 80-100 year old fuel bed.
41: For fire incidents, describe resistance to control in terms of:
1. Growth Potential - Extreme
2. Difficulty of Terrain - High
42: How likely is it that containment/control targets will be met, given the current resources and suppression/control strategy?
Given the current weather and resources, the spread potential is high.
43: Projected demobilization start date: 07/20/2004 1800

We heard FF on scanner say, 'Hey we told 'em. That's all we can do. This fire is coming through this canyon. Let's get out of here.' -- some folks were resisting leaving.

From the A.V. Press staff story:

Sheriff's investigators say the fire likely was started by an arsonist on the roadside of Pine Canyon Road near the Pacific Crest Trail on Monday afternoon. Investigators did not say what evidence led them to believe the fire was intentionally set.

Around 1,500 firefighters battled the blaze, which had expanded to approximately 10,290 acres Thursday night. The fire was about 40% contained.

Several threatened homes were saved by fire crews charged with structural protection. Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector John Mancha, acting captain, confirmed two homes, five outbuildings and one motor home were lost to the blaze.

Approximately 500 people have evacuated their homes and businesses since Monday, with fire officials strongly urging residents in Lake Elizabeth and Lake Hughes to voluntarily evacuate.

"What we don't want is for the fire to push southeast up into the canyons, towards Lake Hughes," said Stanton Florea, an officer with the Angeles National Forest. "If the winds continue to push it into the lower elevations, we can get a handle on it."

It seems that's exactly what has happened.

In the LAT story,

"10,000+" became "14,000" acres
"brush that hasn't burned for 80 years" became "brush that hasn't burned in almost 100 years"
"40% containment" became "The fire is only 37% contained, down significantly from just two days ago when it was nearly half contained."
"we strongly advise" became "Residents in the communities of Lake Hughes, Elizabeth Lake and Green Valley fled the area"

just noticing differences as you read what is basically the same story over & over, with little changes here & there.

A wall of flame threatens a ranch house Thursday in the Tweedy Lake area of the Antelope Valley. Firefighers managed to save the structure. Fires threatened residences in the rural Three Points, Tweedy Lake and Lake Hughes areas.

A helicopter drops fire retardant on a Lake Hughes house that was threatened by flames on Thursday. The house was saved. Despite this success, the fate of three tiny communities on the northern edge of the Angeles National Forest was far from assured. Fires are also burning in Riverside and San Diego counties.

Aircraft flying over the Pine Fire before making a fire retardant drop on the rolling hills of Tweedy Lake.

Tammy Lavelle Adams with daughters Meganrose, 8, and Allison, 10, watch as a fire moves toward their Lake Hughes community on Thursday. The family had already completed preparations for a possible evacuation.

It's gotta be so scary. "We saw erratic, unbelievable fire activity last night," county fire Capt. Dennis Cross said in a broadcast report. Tweedy Lake is the focus this morning.. Three Points is nine miles from Lake Hughes. I don't know how many miles exist between L.H. and the fire's current location.

What does 'WFU' stand for, specifically? They believe the Yosemite fire was sparked by lightning.
