My wife received a very nice, colorful flyer from the NEA this weekend recommending John Kerry for President. The flyer contained some quotes from Kerry and concluded that NEA members should vote for him. I wonder how much money the NEA spent to send this crap to its 2.7 million members? I checked out the website that the flyer references to see what they are saying about Kerry and Bush.
Here is why the NEA feels its members should vote for John Kerry:
John Kerry: A Record of Respect and Support For Teachers and Education Support Professionals
"We cannot be content to see those who teach the next generation treated like second-rate employees, not like the professionals they are." John Kerry, May 17, 2004
When it comes to respect and support for teachers and education support professionals, John Kerry has a track record second to none. Senator Kerry vows that as president he will focus on the right priorities for America, including putting an end to federal mandates such as No Child Left Behind that don't have the necessary resources. Kerry believes that for every child to learn, educators must have the freedom to make decisions without interference from Washington bureaucrats. Kerry also believes that a strong America begins in the classroom. NEA recommends Kerry because . . .
-John Kerry will fix and fund No Child Left Behind.
-John Kerry opposes siphoning money away from public schools to risky voucher schemes and believes that voucher programs that fund private and religious schools undermine public schools.
-John Kerry will expand health care to all children and to most of the 43 million citizens who currently have none, and he will cut administrative waste to make health care more affordable.
-John Kerry will establish universal preschool to help ensure each child receives a strong start. John Kerry will provide the funding necessary to expand community-based, after-school programs, reaching millions of children who have little or no adult supervision after school.
-John Kerry will reinstate the class size reduction program killed by the current administration, recognizing that all students, especially the youngest, benefit from the more individualized attention possible with smaller class sizes.
-John Kerry will stop the judging and labeling of schools on the basis of one test and instead allow for a school's success to be based on multiple measures, such as dropout and attendance rates.
-John Kerry will get students out of crumbling schools and portable classrooms (trailers) and into modernized buildings, instead of spending millions to rebuild more than 2,000 schools in Iraq and Afghanistan.
-John Kerry understands that Americans who have earned Social Security benefits should get them, and that is why he supports the repeal of the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision.
-John Kerry will appoint a Secretary of Education who believes in and supports teachers, public school employees and public schools.
So much for the cutting out of Washington bureaucrats.
And Kerry, hate to break the news, but you won't be President of the Universe.
I am a teacher of 35 years .My wife has 34 years under her belt and John Kerry will not get OUR vote.
" Flush the Johns!!"
Because taxpayers are still allowed to keep some of their money. And we want it.
Wow, I am stunned. I guess it's ok if kids don't learn as long as they are actually in school. I am amazed.
Liberal teachers with heads of mush, they can't get their students to pass tests in NYS. Vote for Kerry and get more of the same. NYSUT will be right behind the NEA. As a sub I see what we have in the schools. Last election all I saw was Hillary buttons on the females. Now Kerry stickers were on the car bumpers before school ended.
The NEA is a government agency and not allowed to campaign for any candidate. If this person has anything on the NEA campaigning or endorsing John Kerry, please contact Federal Authorities and the RNC since this would be strictly illegal.
They sure want the money from Washington, but screw any accountability. I would gladly support their position of opposing Washington control, if only they coupled that with a willingness to eliminate funding from the Feds.
The NEA supports John Kerry because he wants to SPEND, SPEND AND SPEND MORE!
Quick answer: The "No Child Left Behind" Act, which requires newer, higher standards for teachers, something that the NEA views as an invasion of their turf. How dare we!
If Saddam Hussein was the Democratic Candidate and Abraham Lincoln the Republican, the NEA would endorce Hussein. The NEA is a corrupt arm of the DNC.
Basically, we'll all be taxed at 70% to fund teacher's unions, then the schools will continue to implement property tax increases to fund smaller classrooms. Hey - it's for the children.
Can't let these fools into the White House.
The web site for the communist party of America (cpusa.org) links directly to the teachers union and to rainbow/push. 'nuff said.
She avoided talking politics at work for years, just assuming that all the other teachers were liberals. But when the subject came up, she found out that almost all of them vote Republican most of the time. And this is in New Jersey!
I'm sure this is an aberration though. As is the fact that the children in her school actually learn things of value.
The NEA is a labor union with nonprofit status. Endorsing a candidate is not illegal. What is illegal is that the NEA reports zero spending from member dues on political action, and thus, pays no taxes on the "nonexistent" expenditures. I would say that sending out mailings to vote for Kerry qualifies as a political expenditure.
They just shuffle money around to evade the law.
The mailing is probably officially funded via some NEA Legacy Fund that is officially independent of the union.
I agree with many of the remarks made about the NEA and John Kerry. But let's talk intelligently...the NEA can not AND does not spend any members dues for political action so they are not breaking the law nor reporting incorrectly to the government. Political Action Committee monies (PAC) are collected along with dues. Members may request that money back from the NEA each fall. I urge you to do so as that is the money that is going to support many of the things you don't agree with.
