Pompeii find shows secrets of the Samnites

By Bruce Johnston in Rome
(Filed: 05/07/2004)

The discovery in Pompeii of a pre-Roman temple is being hailed as evidence that the city was sophisticated and thriving 300 years before Vesuvius erupted.

The temple is said to be of Mephitis, a female deity worshipped by the Samnites, a mysterious ancient people who preceded the Romans in Pompeii.

The temple complex includes a sanctuary where it is thought girls from good families worked briefly in "sacred prostitution" as a rite of passage to full womanhood.

The Samnites were previously thought of as mountain warriors, whose settlements thrived due to a military pact with Rome, but archaeologists say the finds suggest instead that theirs was an advanced society in its own right.

The discovery is the result of a three-year joint project by the University of London and the University of Basilicata in Italy. It is said to have come as a "complete surprise".

Well, read Livy and you know the Samnites were formidable opponents of the Romans. Came real close to defeating them. Livy tells a great story where the Samnites captured an entire Roman army. The wisest Samnite counselor said to let them go. When that was not accepted he advised killing them all. His reason was that anything other than complete friendship or warfare with the Romans would end in disaster. The Samintes did not follow his advice. They sent the Roman army "under the yoke" earning their hatred and ultimately their own destruction.

And they know this how? Of all the things they could say and comment on they refer to child sex. Why?

At least the Supreme Court hasn't ordered "sacred prostitution" yet.

The girl died before her time, but was basically a wife of her owner from age 8 or so.

the bracelet
the hoard
Gold bracelet found on arm of (slave?) girl killed near Pompeii by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. On the inside of the bracelet is carved "from the Master to his slave girl" (DOM[I]NUS ANCILLAE SUAE).

I am a retired Army Chaplain (ret 1995); VietNam vet - 1967-1969 (Field Artillery Officer in those days)

I am currently teaching a Comparative Worldview (biblical vs humanist) class in the evenings at the Air Force Academy Prep School, Colorado Springs. Third year at Air Force Academy. Taught same class at the West Point Prep school for five years.

I also have the privilege of teaching several classes in Colorado Springs to high school, college, and adults on comparative worldviews (biblical vs secular). As I read the various threads, some impress me as good for illustrating different worldviews. So, using some Army terminology, I mark threads as

When I get home, I download these reports to a database for future class use.

Hope that helps?

Thanks. I had seen the acronym before and had gathered the gist of it. I just could not resist the slight pun on "SPQR" (Senate and People of Rome) given the topic.

Best Freeper Regards,
