For military devices, this has interesting implications. For detection and triggering, it could use very fine-grain criteria to distinguish, just as we do with our sense of touch. If the detection data can make it to the processing units at speed-of-light instead of the much slower human nervous system, devices using this would be possibly far, far faster than humans.

If we continue to let ourselves be outpaced on the technology front, it will have major military and economic impact. Having this type of advanced technology created in another country puts us at a big disadvantage. It may be years before researchers and weapons designers in the U.S. can even purchase this, much less work with it, and they will be in line with everyone else around the world.
