Freep of Kerry fundraiser with B. Clinton and Natalie Portman
self | 6-15-2004 | self

Posted on 06/15/2004 9:48:08 PM PDT by staytrue

On June 14, 2004, the Kerry campaign held a fundraiser in Washington DC. Bill Clinton was be there as was Star Wars sequel princess, actress Natalie Portman. The required contribution was $50 to get in or $150, to a VIP reception with Ms. Portman.

I decided we could not let the attendees to have a one sided view of things, so I went down with my sign to state my point of view.

The freep was mostly uneventful except for a few points.

More that a few attendees were smiling, waving, and giving me the thumbs up sign. My guess is that these were Star Wars fans going to see Ms. Portman.

Considering the low admission fee, and having a former president, and a big name movie star, Attendance was a pathetic 300-400. This meant that they may have grossed $40,000. Dinner was supposed to be included so their net was much less that that.

Finally, no one disagreed with my sign. The only comments I got was "neither is bush" or "bush is worse".

I had a few sympathizers come by and chat with me.

One made a point that in Kerry's Vietnam photos, he is the only one wearing a dress uniform and medals while the real soldiers were wearing their regular uniforms. He continued by saying that in Vietnam, no one had dress uniforms due to the conditions and that he thought Kerry went there just to polish his resume for the future.

I have not looked at the Vietnam photos to confirm this, but someone else might take a look.

The first Star Wars sequel (Ms. Portman was in the cast.)was one of the most UN PC movies ever made. The galactic govt. is described as corrupt and ineffective (anti govt.). There is absolute good and evil (no relativistic morality here). Almost the entire cast is white. The good guys are entrepreneurial while the bad guys are centrally commanded. The comic relief character seems close to 1960's black carricature.

The second of the Star Wars sequels was a really really bad movie.

Good job! I thought Natalie Portman had enough brains to stay away from cads like our former Pres. I hope she survived her evening with him unmolested.

I am a star wars fan and I liked the first 3 and the first sequel. The last was a dud. Maybe the 3rd sequel will be good.

The man is right and that is the first thing that my husband pointed out about the photos of Kerry and the swift boat crew. He said that the men would not even have their dress uniforms with them. There's no room for things you wouldn't use or wear. The pictures were pre-planned, he even brought his own super eight camera and re-staged the events so that he could be recorded in "battle".

I've come to the conclusion that the only Star Wars film I will watch is the first one from the 1970s.

Some say that Empire is a better film (better effects, basics already laid down, more drama, etc.). It ends with several cliffhangers. It is an incomplete film (the first one can stand on its own).

If you watch Return of the Jedi, you are stuck with a subpar followup and the whole thing ends with those damn Ewoks (teddy bear marketing tool, I hear in part because there wasn't the budget for a planet of Wookies).

Then if you watch this new trilogy, you are stuck with the whole story ark being the story of young Hitler, er Darth Vader. We find him in the first film as being a slave who must win the race to "save the farm" or whatever they raced for in so many movies in the 1930s-1980s.

In the second film, he falls in love with a princess (how else would his daughter become Princess Leia?).

In the third film he goes over to the dark side.

I would be interesting in hearing what the final trilogy was supposed to deal with. That is the only story arch that could redeem the franchise in my mind. In absence of it, I will hold to just the first film.

I don't know about that. As an officer and a gentleman I'm sure he had to have some Class A's in his kit. Don't forget that there was a lot of amenities for those who were not in the boonies or at fire bases.

Khakis aren't considered "a dress uniform". Dress Whites and Dress Blues are. Khakis would more than likely be the uniform of the day for zeros and chiefs while dungarees would be the uniform of the day for all other enlisted personnel. Kerry went to Viet Nam to maintain his political viability just like Slick Willie lied to Colonel Holmes to do the same.

Great! You also raise a good point that I wish our side would mention more. Kerry was not even a leader in the U.S. Senate of 100 people, what makes him think he can lead the greatest country in the world? What did he do for 20 years in the U. S. Senate?

My husband had two swift boat crews assigned to his ship (as their base of operation) and he says they no one had any dress uniforms with them. The boats were very small and they rotated two crews on one boat, one week on and one week off. Every veteran that sees those pictures laughs at the thought that Kerry took his dress uniform along.

Seriously doubt that they were on patrol at they time the picture was taken. The crew appears to be posing for a picture after they received their commendations. If they were on patrol, they would be in olive drab.

You don't understand, the crews did not live aboard the boats, they were rotated one week on and one week off, two crews for each boat. The boat that was assigned to my husand' ship was lost, along with one crew. Whenever they were aboard the boat, they were on patrol.

I agree. I refuse to watch the new prequels. I am a SW purist. The original three is enough for me. I will say, however, that Luke in RotJ was kinda annoying, all high and mighty just because he was a Jedi.

I wouldn't know Natalie Portman if I tripped over her and, apparently, neither would this guy (as recounted in the NY Post today):

DON'T hang around near Natalie Portman's summer hideaway in Sea Cliff, L.I., if you know what's good for you. Last Saturday, someone inside Portman's pad called 911 to report a suspicious person, the latest of several calls summoning police to the house, according to a neighbor. Two cop cars showed up to interrogate the man who'd been sitting on a curb, reading a book and drinking a cup of tea.

But the suspected "stalker" turned out to be 21-year-old Antwone LeGarde — a French-born college student staying with his girlfriend's family down the street. LeGarde had never even heard of the 23-year-old "Star Wars" actress. "The police officers were laughing about it," said Daniel Haim, whose parents own the house where LeGarde was staying. "They said, 'This is the third or fourth time she's done this.' Every time someone comes near her house, she thinks they're stalking her. It's a little strange."

Haim, formerly a lieutenant in Sea Cliff's fire department, added, "[Antwone] didn't even know who she was. He was sitting on curb overlooking the beach reading a book . . . I guess she's above calling to apologize."

Portman's lawyer, Marty Singer, confirmed that Portman's mother, Shelly, called 911 on Saturday. But he would not comment when we asked him about earlier calls to the tiny town's police force, other than to say, "Natalie has never called the police. She didn't know anything about it. There was a young person sitting near their property for a very long period of time. Her mother called 911. She never used the word, 'stalker.' "

But LeGarde remembers the incident differently: "I was sitting on the sidewalk, reading 'The Alchemist,' and apparently it was near the corner of her house. The police show up and they asked me for my ID and ran a check in their car. I asked, 'Is it a crime to read a book now?'

"And one of the officers said, 'Natalie Portman called because she was afraid you were a stalker.' The name didn't register with me. Then they went to my girlfriend's parents house and interviewed them about me, to see if I was telling the truth. I found it a little excessive, but I guess it's a good story to tell my friends."

A spokeswoman for the Nassau County Police Dept. declined to comment about any 911 calls emanating from Portman's pad.

What did he do for 20 years in the U. S. Senate?

I have no idea. Even more shocking is that Kerry was never a leader on the democrat side in an institution that favors seniority over ability.

To be in the Senate for 20 years and have accomplished as little as Kerry is truely remarkable. You almost have to deliberately try to do nothing to have as minimal a record as Kerry.

No, I wasn't in Vietnam (by the way, asking me that as if a negetive reply invalidates my response makes YOU sound like John Kerry).

I AM an active duty Chief Petty Officer. I AM wearing that exact same uniform as I type this.

It is NOT a DRESS unform-it is a WORKING uniform like the dungarees the other sailors are wearing. There's plenty of REAL issues to hammer Kerry on. This is not one.

The second of the Star Wars sequels was a really really bad movie.

You ain't kidding. And Portman was partially responsible for it. She's an average actress, and Hayden Christiansen is brutal. I couldn't buy their romance for a second.

George Lucas has put himself in a corner. The last of the prequels better be good, or the entire series is tainted.
