TO HELL WITH HIM! He destroyed the Soviet Union!”

So said a citizen of Moscow, in a radio piece on Russian reactions to the death last Saturday of President Ronald Reagan. Reagan would have considered it the highest of compliments.

Other Russians praised Reagan. One characterized him as the “catalyst” that led to the downfall of what Reagan called, to the horror of liberals everywhere, the “Evil Empire.”

A true catalyst affects change without itself changing. That was Ronald Reagan. He never changed. He never wavered. He held fast to his core beliefs, which freed the American economy from skyrocketing tax rates and regulation and freed millions of peoples from 40 years behind the Iron Curtain.

Ronald Reagan truly believed in America as the “shining city on the hill.” Tributes have called him an optimist who always thought the glass “half full.” On the contrary, he thought America’s cup was full to the brim with opportunity, hope, and promise.

Somewhere, above the blue horizon, Ronald Wilson Reagan is now enjoying his just rewards. And his old friends, the late Publishers William and Nackey Loeb, who held fast to their own belief in Reagan, are smiling.
