Ohio Lawmaker Wants Reagan Added To Mount Rushmore

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An Ohio state representative wants to see President Ronald Reagan's image added to Mount Rushmore.

Rep. Ron Young, R-Painesville, introduced a resolution Monday requesting Congress to add the former president's image to the South Dakota landmark.

Reagan died Saturday at the age of 93. He was the nation's 40th president, and is credited with putting an end to the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

"During the years of President Reagan, America laid to rest an era of division and self-doubt. Because of his leadership, the world laid to rest an era of fear and tyranny," Young said. "I conceived this idea some time ago, and had this resolution drafted and ready to introduce because I can think of no better way to honor the Great Communicator than to have his image added to Mount Rushmore."

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are already honored on Mount Rushmore, which represents the first 150 years of American history.

How about a mock up of what it would look like?

They better use an image with a smile!!

Not that image from the viva Reagan revolution t-shirt.

I love the idea, but the libs won't let it happen...you can't honor Ronald Reagan, they hate him to much and to have such a heavily visited place be a monument to RR would be a crime to them.

Then you have to ask the question is it feasible without damaging the other faces. Which will probably be their excuse for not doing so.

Leave Mount Rushmore alone! If we try to put Reagan up there (or on any other mountain) the 'Rats' will demand (and probably get) FDR - or worse yet - Clinton. They would claim for "balance" or some other idiotic reason.

If memory serves, the reason why Roosevelt is tucked between Jefferson and Lincoln is that the moutain couldn't support the carving to the right of Lincoln. So I don't think that they could carve Reagan in with the rest. They'll have to find another mountain.

I hear you. It would be an utter disgrace to have a 10 story phallus carved into Mt. Rushmore.

Though many of us in the Mt. Rushmore State (South Dakota) would welcome memorializing Reagan in a big way, it simply isn't feasible on Mt. Rushmore due to the geology of the mountain. We do have other granite outcroppings that might be suitable. BTW--an entire mountain is being carved in our Black Hills, not far from Mt. Rushmore, to honor Lakota Chief Crazy Horse.

Tough question:

Now that he's gone....who's the greatest, living, ex-President?

We've been through this. The structure of the mountain won't take it. There is no place for another face. The original called for a scroll to the right side with a timeline of America, but that was scrapped due to lack of money, and, in retrospect, the simplicity of the faces is much better without it. Ronnie is going to have to find another home.

You're right. But then, wait 'til all the wailing and gnashing of teeth happens from libs when a Reagan Monument is built someday on the Mall in DC! :)

YEA! GOPHER BAROQUE! Use a different mountain if no portions of Rushmore are solid enough.

10 story phallus carved into Mt. Rushmore.

It wouldn't be that big, and it would have to be bent.

I'm still advocating a $1 Reagan coin which would have an appearance, weight, and "feel" similar to the one pound sterling coin used in the UK. Anybody who's visited Britain will know what I mean. They feel like little lumps of gold and would be easy to differentiate from all our other coins.

The cost savings to the treasury in replacing paper $1 bills is considerable and Reagan's image on a genuine dollar coin (not the cheap quarter look alikes with obscure and PC historical figures they've tried in the past) would put him in the same class with George Washington. The main problem might be what to do with George if dollar bills are no longer circulated.

I think a memorial in Washington not unlike the Lincoln or Jefferson would be much more effective. Besides adding another president to Mt Rushmore would be like adding another disciple to the Last Supper.

While I love the thought of RR on a coin, a dollar coin will never work in this country. Dollars are bills, not coins. I don't think we've had a successful dollar coin in over 75 years. (How widely used were the eisenhower coins?)

Hehehe. Peter, James, John, MEL?? I agree. A great memorial---and not a "new art/new age" memorial, would be perfect.

Yes, leave Rushmore as is. Carve Reagan into Yosemite.

There is room yes, but the rest of the rock on the mountain is not suitable for an new carving. It is a very old mountain range and had many fissors. My source on this is a show from the History Channel where the head park range said they could not add a new face. There are however other near by mountains to consider.

On a drive through the park I looked for a place to add faces, but it looked like slim choices. There is another bluff where they had considered standing figures, but it wouldn't be of the same caliber as Rushmore.

There ahs been talk on and off for decades about putting FDR or JFK on Rushmore. There ahve been surveys done, and there is not more suitable rock on the mountain for a carving on the scale of the other four.

"...adding another president to Mt Rushmore would be like adding another disciple to the Last Supper."

Or adding a prosthesis to Venus de Milo!

I fully agree. As much as I love and admire President Reagan, I don't think tampering with a national monument/work-of-art is the best way memorialize him. And I believe Reagan himself would have felt the same way.

Regards,
Lenny

That's how it looks to me, too. There is a fine carving in progress a couple miles away on the reservation.

You could well be right but trust in paper currency is a relatively recent thing. When coins went from silver and gold to metals with no intrinsic value that all changed for good.

IMHO the problem with past attempts were that the dollar coins looked and felt like quarters or featured people only a professor of "wymyn's studies" could love. The pound sterling coin in the UK looks and feels like heavy soft buttery gold. I don't know what kind of alloys they use but it feels like "real money" and there's no way the Brits would go back to one pound notes.
