Have to admit I watched it tonight (at least the last half)...even though I almost never watch CBS. Truth is, I actually thought it was a very positive piece. Most of the time was spent on personal stories of Nancy and Ronald Reagan's 50-year love affair. All in all, not bad considering the source.
O fcourse, FOX has done the best job, but who is surprised by that. Anyone else watch it? Thoughts if you did?
I watched it. It was very good! I was so shocked I could barely believe it! It was the first time I cried since I heard the news yesterday. 60 minutes actually did a very nice job! They played up the President's humor alot, but that's ok! President Reagan USED humor alot, and he did very well with it. Even Andy Rooney was respectful about D-day. I about bit my tongue off.
Ok, I just read everyone's comments here. Go ahead and slap me! (I can take it) I know we're used to a bunch of knarly crap from CBS and 60 minutes, but it seems many folks judged them (wrongly) before they even saw the piece on RR. C'mon, aren't we better than that? Slam them AFTER you see what they put out, eh? Maybe they'll get the hint. But unwarranted criticism before a fair viewing is what the left is most guilty of, dontcha think?
Lori, take some drugs and go to bed!
No, not ME, Lori the ugly witch (who has a wife?) uuuuuggggghhhhh!! Maybe I should change my name now?
I watched C-SPAN for part of the day when they featured replays of several speeches given by President Reagan. The two I saw were both given in 1992. One was at the GOP National Convention in August---it was so upsetting to see the hope and inspiration...cries of "Thank you, Ron!" by the cheering crowd...and hear his stirring speech...and then to know the terrible outcome of that election and my part in it...voted for that damned Perot even after I met him in person and decided he was a little crazy.
The other speech was given in December '92 at Oxford University for the Oxford Union (Debate Club). Fantastic! I had forgotten just how magnificent a speaker President Reagan was. Fortunately, I believe President Bush has many of the same qualities of character even though he doesn't communicate nearly as well. I have digressed considerably, haven't I? :o)
I am glad I missed this. It would be 60 Minutes of Iran-Contra.
Don't forget that Ronald Reagan and the CIA created crack too in order to destroy the inner cities!
I am really glad to hear that... I decided to go watch my son's softball game instead...and had a great time. Am glad to hear that FOX did a great job.
I've been watching A&E's documentary on President Reagan and really enjoyed it. I was a kid when he was elected....and not into politics at all. It filled in so many blanks for me...such as info about his previous careers, marriages, and speeches. They interviewed close advisors, Nancy Reagan, Ron Reagan, Mike Reagan and Patty Davis. I learned so much about their relationships, Nancy's fears after the assassination attempt (I had no idea he had a severe staph infection from it), her insight into his career, life and politics in general...
It felt like I was able to learn more about his ups/downs and triumphs in more of a first hand way. In some cases, he definitely had a bad support team. Witnessing some of the events wrt:his relationship with the soviet union was enlightening.
He is/was brave..and had a heart of Gold. The media makes me wanna puke..and so do those who don't recognize all of the triumphs he had or the person he was. The media as an entity needs to be refurbished big time.
Though I never ever watch 60 Minutes, because of happening to see this thread, I turned on the program last night.
It was an excellent segment that Wallace did, many old clips of RR and Nancy, it made me very nostalgic for those times. Yes, lots of RR's humor, he was so funny.
I had tears in my eyes for much of the program.
Even the segment Rather did was fine.
Never expected it to be half as good as it was.
Really appreciate it that you put the thread up! Was wishing I had taped the program after it was over.
Should have flagged you to my comment, sorry! Thanks for putting up the thread!
Fox gets an A+. They have had wonderful and positive coverage all day.
It will be interesting to see "60 Minutes II," and how it handles the Reagan story. From what I understand, the interview was done more than 20 years ago, during President Reagan's first term in the White House. Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic, but I think Wallace will give Mr. Reagan his due. You mentioned Wallace's 60-year friendship with Mrs. Reagan; he also became friends with Mr. Reagan when he covered his 1976 bid for the GOP Presidential nomination. And, BTW, Wallace stunned the "panel" on Larry King Saturday night with some comments that (ordinarily) would be grounds for dismissal at CBS News. Discussing Mrs. Reagan's herculean efforts as her husband's primary caregiver, Mike Wallace observed, "she did a helluva job, and you know what, so did he." After that, Larry had to go to a commercial...
I just caught ten minutes of the show, and Leslie Stahl hammered a negative question every minute with some liberal historian. What a B!!!t. In short, a hit piece.
During [Reagan's term]...we found our that her sister-in law had died leaving 4 children orphaned.
I wrote about these types of people in an article. "Other forms of propaganda can lead to long-term, forged, yet unprincipled, party affiliation. They appeal to the personal experiences of the masses: the losing of a spouse, losing of a job or even the losing of a cherished pet during a certain administration. The current administration or congress, depending on the case, becomes the lightning rod for their personal setbacks, because blaming an administration is easier than accepting the real cause. Take, for instance, the layoffs in New York at the Kodak Corporation. Is it fairer to say that the layoffs were the result of a tax cut or even a war against terrorism than, say, the result of digital photography taking an increased share of the Kodak photography market? An oft-repeated slogan like "this is a jobless recovery" or "this is the worst economy since Herbert Hoover" will resonate with anyone that has lost a job in the last four years, regardless of the facts behind the loss. To this day, some people will not cast a vote for a candidate because of an experience they may have had to endure while Nixon was president; never-mind that it occurred decades ago."
Glad to see I haven't lost my marbles.
