I like putting anti-Bush books behind mystery novels! I'll have to try creatively relocating them too.

He was good this morning--he still sounds hoarse--I'd be worried if I didn't know the WH dr. was looking after him. Along with Laura of course. :-) He appeared very cheerful and upbeat tho which was good to see. The cheering yesterday must have given both he and Rummy a lift.

YOu have a great day too!

First some perspective and then I'll attempt to address the questions/observations.

Settling for less is a second place finish at best. We have a man in the White House who is as honest and as straight forward as the office will allow. It's our responsibility to inform him and shape his opinions and we do neither if we don't challenge his excursions off the reservation.

The changes occurring in the Southwestern United States are not evolutionary, they are revolutionary. It is difficult for those not residing in California to appreciate the changes the state has undergone in the past 15 years and is currently undergoing at an accelerating rate. The current tide and recent consequences of unregulated immigration are bankrupting the state, swamping the public schools and straining both county and municipal public safety budgets to their limits. The state can't simply absorb any more unregulated immigrants.

The long running "Day in the Life ..." serial thread is an asset to this forum and will be a priceless record of events for our posterity. But it is also the political promotion of a particular candidate and as such it is subject to legitimate challenge. It is neither a sacred cow nor a message from God. In respect to its promotional value it is simply another partisan thread among the thousands posted each month.

Now to some responses:

AmericanMade1776 wrote: you are fully aware of the many things he has accomplished during his term, under very trying circumstances.

Yes I am. But I am also aware that he has, along the way, done some things and implemented some policies that are far from conservative and not the result of "trying times". To many they appear to be unnecessary political appeasement. Some appear to be down right pandering which is out of character for the man. Overkill if you will in an attempt to make reelection a certainty (read Rove's influence). An unnecessary abandonment of traditional conservative core principals. The farm bill was an excellent example.

Here is where I and Republican Party loyalist part company. They appear willing to overlook these fax paus either because they are outweighed by the positives or for fear of rocking the boat which might lead to defeat in November. All conservatives, Republicans included, had a chance to send a non lethal message to Bush this spring but instead many decided to blindly support his primary bid. I would have wished that he had faired not so well in the primaries and been forced to shore up his base for example by returning to the center (enforce existing law) or moving right (introduce new legislation to combat the rising tide) on the illegal immigration issue.

AmericanMade1776 wrote: I wonder why you chose this thread to voice your discontent.

Because it was the first time in a great while that it showed up on the California Topic and it was posted to the topic in a spam style. The author has since explained the anomaly and I accept his explanation.

If the thread appears on the California Topic again the author can again expect a challenge to the promotion of a his candidate. It is still early enough in the election cycle that Bush could be pursuaded/forced back to the center on critical issues and not jeopardize his chances for reelection. I, in turn, would expect a reasoned response with the grace that your reply contained. Thank you.

Ride the whirlwind wrote:.I'm wondering if our visitor, Amerigomag, has ever seen this thread:

Yes I have. I am a political junkie who is well aware of President Bush's successes and his failures. I seldom engage outside the California Topic because there is so much work to be done in my state. Lately that work is being complicated by Republican loyalists who have promoted an openly "closet liberal" into the highest elected office in the state. Hopefully you can appreciate the rancor from the far right in California.

I appreciate you well written responses to my questions, everything was answered but one.

WHO ARE YOU SUPPORTING FOR ELECTION TO THE PRESIDENCY IN 2004? WHO IS YOUR CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE, OF THE ULTRA CONSERVATIVE PARTY?

As I see it, there are two major candidates in the race for the Presidency, and one of them is our President , and I am giving him my full support, because from what we are lead to believe from the media, is it will be a close race.....and well I can take no chances that John Kerry , the "ultra liberal" wins.

WHO ARE YOU SUPPORTING

I support Bush but I do so holding my nose because of the unregulated immigration nightmare that is engulfing California. I am looking for concessions from his campaign on the issue.

I will vote for my first choice the night before the election as I mark my absentee ballot. It's still early in the campaign but one thing is certain. Kerry will have to pry his vote "from my cold, dead hand".

I'm not even certain at this point whether Kerry will be the Democrat nominee. Stranger things have happened especially when Democrat kingpins privately know they are loosing and loosing by a substantial margin.

from what we are lead to believe from the media, is it will be a close race

The key word is "from the media". The other media (as opposed to ABCCBSNBCLATNYTBGAJC) sees it differently and I tend to agree.

Kerry is not the opposing candidate. Hatred is and hatred tends not to attract strong support if a positive alternative is not presented. Kerry is not a positive alternative either in style, substance or voting record. Neither does hatred provide comfort in the cold reality of the voting booth as we all remember from November of 1996.

Kerry is not even well liked within the ranks of some of the traditional Democrat factions. Kerry is struggling to turn out black voters in overwhelming numbers. His numbers are still trending downward in the military vote. Blue collar support is well below even Gore's numbers from 4 years ago and Kerry just spent the weekend struggling to put down a public uprising within his Hispanic outreach campaign group.

What's left. The New England liberals and the US media which is why I urge caution with regard to "are lead to believe from the media" . The media's credibility numbers and circulation numbers are also trending downward.

One note: In the very unlikely circumstance that Democrats ditch Kerry at the eleventh hour for a Blue Dog or add a popular "sensible" Republican to the ticket then it's a horse race of a different color. Then the loyalists will need to strap on their full regalia, including trumpets and knives, to march the precincts, the traditionally Republican precincts.

<>[I may still attend the convention -- my sister is exploring various options as we speak! Of course, 'come hell or high water' I WILL attend the inauguration ceremonies!!!!]

If you're not checking this already, check into being a "professional volunteer". I believe that's what they call them. My friend is going to be one. From what I understand, that's almost as good as being a delegate and in certain cases better. I understand you get to meet more VIPs and in her case, the expenses are paid, whereas those of us who are delegates, have to pay a flat fee of $300, plus room, air fare, etc. One good thing---we don't have to spend any money for entertainment, food, etc., because that's all provided by corporate sponsors.

I hope we win by a decisive margin this time so it isn't spoiled like the last one was by all the rancor. The media is trying hard to make it another cliffhanger, however.

One of the best ways everyone can help during this election is to sign up to be "poll observers". I was one during the 2002 election and I cannot tell you how many illegal votes I (plus 2 others who worked with me) stopped. We didn't stop all of them, but in the one precinct, we stopped no less than 300. That precinct had a little over 2,000 voters, so that was quite a few. We need as many observers as we can get at ALL precincts, especially those that are considered "trouble spots".

Amerigomag, concerning this remark

"One note: In the very unlikely circumstance that Democrats ditch Kerry at the eleventh hour for a Blue Dog or add a popular "sensible" Republican to the ticket then it's a horse race of a different color. No NO SENSIBLE REPUBLICAN WOULD JOIN A TICKET WITH AN ULTRA LIBERAL DEMOCRAT LIKE JOHN KERRY WHOSE MAJOR SUPPORTER IS TED "BENEDICT ARNOLD" KENNEDY.

You are living a pipe dream.

Unforntunately for the "god guys" many conseravtives are not anxious to vote for a president who has done more to publicly encourage illegal immigration than any president since Ronald Reagan* Hopefully Bush will mend his ways before late October.

*Reagan latter confessed that signing the legislation in 1986 was the only serious mistake of his presidency.

We're staying at the Warwick Hotel. 64th or 65th and 5th Avenue. Our information says that the Beatles and Elvis Presley stayed there. Also, Cary Grant "lived" there. Let's talk about meeting, closer to convention time. I'm volunteering about 60 hrs per week for one of our gubernatorial candidates and it's a primary which is July 20th. Along with that, I'm an accountant and trying to make a living. :-) Can't even think, at the moment.

I apologize. I overlooked this reply when it should have jumped up and bit me. I am shaking my head. The remarks are so far removed from the facts. Lets review some facts:

1) Bush's statement of January 7 started a gold rush north and that takes some doing since the train is already crowded.
2) California spends approximately 1/3 of it's annual budget, that's $33B with a B, addressing the needs of the consequences of illegal immigration.
3) The dot.com bust was a precipitant but the core problem was the escalating illegals immigration numbers. Even with a strong tech sector, within 15 years no amount of market strength will support the cost to educate this group who is expanding at almost twice the rate of the rest of the states population.
4) You bet the liberal Legislature had a role in this but they aren't creating the children who are swamping our schools (education is their greatest cost), they aren't raising the children in third world conditions, leading to elevated health care needs (their second greatest cost) nor are they looking the other way when strong parenting is needed to prevent the formation of gangs and the consequent crime that it creates (their third greatest cost).

No patriciaruth, here's the pecking order that created and sustains California's economic crisis.

1) A president (Bush) who is encouraging rather than combating illegal immigration.
2) A governor (Schwarzenegger) who is negotiating in apparent good faith with the illegal immigration lobby in California and is acting like a fedral official meeting and dealing directly with of the corrupt Mexican government.
3) Last but not least, Republican Party loyalists who are willing to erode US sovereignty for a chance at political victory for their party. Shame on them all.

Sorry again for not responding earlier. Too many Republican wildebeests and so few conservative lions.

The only way to stop illegal immigration is to educate Latinos to vote Republican. Then the Dems will stampede in legislation to halt illegal immigration so fast it'll make your head spin.

Until then, the liberal domination of the media, and much of the judiciary out here, will insure the public is treated to demonizing demagoguery about Republicans who try to do anything meaningful about the problem.

Right now, our most viable options are surveilance of the borders under the guise of national security, and educating American born Latino children to become productive citizens by insisting on learning standards in schools and thus tend more to Republican voting, for economic and religious heritage reasons. We also hope we can get some of American history and ideals instilled in these children. This is our Pied Piper undercover operation--to steal these children and make Americans out of them.

You have blinders on if you don't understand that we lost the war of the reconquista in the 90's here in California. Our hope for the survival of the American dream is to absorb the kids to share our ideals, to love America....to embrace the Latinos into the Republican ranks and make them into Americans.

I don't care what color, race, religion America is in the future; I care that they will believe in God and believe in the American Way.

There is no doubt that illegal immigration has cost us and is costing us far more than we have received in return, but the problem is not solvable until the broadcast media changes its tune. As a hopeful note, the Sierra Club is becoming more and more split over the issue, as more and more of them realize that the costs are not just to the economy but also to the environment and endangered species habitats.

we lost the war ... in the 90's here in California.

I'm afraid I agree.

The stark reality is that the development of California's limited natural resources can't match their population explosion hence the apparent dichotomy within the ranks of the Sierra Club.

As I've said before, land use planning (gentrification), housing code enforcement and the mechanization of agriculture in conjunction with their prolific reproductive rates will eventually disperse these poorly assimilated, alien masses to other states.

What provides no comfort however is that Bush is cooperating and apparently will continue cooperating with Fox to the detriment of our sovereignty. The topper is that Fox has engineered a win-win scheme to preserve the control of the twelve ruling families in Mexico while assuring that his impoverished and restless will not be available to cause trouble for the oligarchy.

I suspect that history may well treat our 43rd president very uncharitably. The war on terror will be noted but the potential damage he can to do to our nation if he keeps inviting and encouraging massive, unregulated immigration may cause the Iraq conflict to pale in comparison 100 years from now.

Reagan made a similar error in 1986, which led to the war of the reconquista in the 90's and Davis' subsequent green light to the Mexican government on April 16, 1999, but the problem in 1986 was small enough, relative to today's numbers, that Reagan got away with it and it was months before the state realized the gravity of Davis' decision. Simply too late to punish Davis ... on that issue.

Bush will not be so lucky if he maintains his present tact in the face of the literal wall of Mexicans "headed north" since his January 7 invitation and pep rally.

History will treat Bush much better than even most of his supporters think.

There are things that happen that immortalize certain Presidents. Events, and not just the character of the man make a great President.

History has more twists and turns for us before we see the end of this story.

Take care,
Patty
