A good summation of combat vs service support troops...

Care to explain to this combat support soldier, and the others on Free Republic, what you meant by that?

We left the gates of Anaconda in Iraq about 10 a.m. The convoy was going fine and it was almost a regular day in Iraq; there were cars up and down the four lane highways and there were people everywhere in all the towns; it was a normal day.

Prior to the ambush things were pretty quiet. The assets needed for convoy security were most likely being used elsewhere for digging out known bad guys.
Assets are not unlimited.

The seven-year old was holding his weapon upside down by the magazine, and the ten-year old was firing three rounds at a time at me. His first round hit the driver's side windshield on the truck - right next to my head. I turned around to grab my gun, and when I did, he shot me two more times in the back; the rounds went through me and into the cab of the truck.
I grabbed my weapon, jumped out, and fired two rounds over their heads; I didn’t want to shoot them - they were just l'il kids.

I wholly agree with you, once they're shooting at you, kids or not- feel free to plug 'em- At that point it's a you or them kind of situation. Reminds me of the scene in Blackhawk Down wher the little kid tries to shoot a soldier and hits his father. My first thought was, why didn't he shoot the kid who just tried to kill him? We must always remember, little primitive screwheads shooting at you will only grow up to be big primitive screwheads shooting at you. May as well get it over with early. I know it sounds harsh, but I've about had it with this BS.

Ditto on that. I think our troops need even MORE support.

"After reading stories like this, I am even more determined to take on liberals, democrats, progressives, and the media bias of the left wing...."

While our troops fight on one front, we civilians must find courage to bring the fight to our enemies here at home.

Although we do not use the typical weapons of warfare; our voices, our actions, and the truth can be just as devastating if we have the resolve and determination to see it through to the end.

I think 2banana had a brain fart with this statement. Makes no sense to me either.

WOW! Those kids should have been taken out the first time, though.

This guy and that convoy went through hell!

Our culture ingrains the protection of women and children into us at an early age. “Women and children first” is what we hear along with “man the lifeboats” or “fire”. In the old cowboy and Indian movies, the worst that could be said of people was that they “even killed women and children”. It has been used in anti-German, Japanese, etc. propaganda and in every war we have fought since the 17th Century. This has been used against us in several wars.
I can’t blame soldiers for initially hesitating to fire on them. Most quickly learn that all cultures are not as protective as ours, and that self preservation often dictates adapting to foreign cultural mores.

No, Sarmajor, I think it was yet another snake-eater-wannabe slam against the troops, by some armchair know-it-all.

My bad. Wrong thread. If you were moved by the story of the escort attack in Baghdad, you will find Thunder Run fascinating. If you were captivated by the talking Kraut terlet, may I suggest "The Producers?"
