I've been studying some interesting Bible doctrine regarding the 'heart', memory recall, compartments of the soul, and language associated with neurology.

It is interesting that the symptoms described might be similar to a separation of left and right portions of the brain which might be associated with different personalities. If the linkages between the two are separated, one might tend to act emotionally with explicit language identified by the person, but not analyzed and discerned by the same person with both sides functioning and communicating between themselves.

The studies I was reviewing were over 20 years old and this has been an area of rapid development in the past two decades, although the more things change, the more man stays the same with regard to the soul and spirit.

Another interesting perspective is that we are fighting in some if not the oldest regions of the world. Some interpretations of Scriptural Prophecy indicates an army of demons are still bound beneath the Euphrates River in this region. Considering how much antiChristian and anti-Israeli behavior is associated with that region, when one considers the existence of demon influence and possession, it's perplexing if there may be more spiritual risk for unbelievers in that area than many recognize or ever consider.

Both of these fringe areas touch upon similar behavior of those influenced by demon influence, possession, or simply isolated from Holy Spirit filled souls.

Out of curiousity, are you Christian, and if so, did you find the drug to interfere with any devotion to Bible study?

Also did any close loved ones discern changes in your judgment or increae of emotionalism over analysis in your thinking and types of language spoken?

Yes, I am a Christian, and, yes, I found it hard to be consistent due to dragging me out of bed. Also, I found myself questioning God as to whether He really meant what He was telling me. My quiet times start our in the Psalms and I would discuss the verses with Him as I read them. I was interpreting my world quite negatively at that time so I was more demanding than I normally would be.

Malaria itself is a depressent. In me, a depressed spirit, along with an intense headache which doesn't respond to pain meds, is one of the first signs of malaria. But during the time after I took the lariam, I often had tears. I questioned why I'm doing the work I'm doing. I questioned the purpose in my life and indeed, anyone's life. These questions are normally settled for me. Praise the Lord they are settled! I put my faith in God based on the fact of His Word. There was little or no emotional affirmation during that time.

More detail: I had malaria at Christmas time. I had just recovered less than a week from a bout of tersiana malaria but the symptoms started again. Rather than take chloroquin again (it obviously didn't kill all the parasites), I tried the lariam. These side effects weren't known at this time. The dosage was five pills over the course of two days. It did kill the malaria. But a week later I thought I was having a heart attack and sought medical help for that. Fortunately, I wasn't. But I was not quite healthy either. Then followed with the depression. I was convinced everyone hated me. Even as late as March I had to leave a meeting because someone teasing me upset me so badly I could not stay. Slowly and gradually I pulled out of this time. During the latter stages I was alerted to these side effects and could tell myself that my thoughts were "lariam" thoughts and not truth.

But it was a long scary time. DON'T TAKE THE DRUG!!!

How horrible. I would hope this drug's effect would be evaluated pronto, before more victims show up, if indeed that is what caused this bizarre behavior. Very strange indeed.
