Palestine Awareness Month Continues At Stanford. Photo Show Today, Rachel Corrie Yesterday

The week-long “Mind, Body and Soul of Palestine” exhibit — designed to show the mood, emotions and culture of the Palestinian people through photographs — arrived on the second floor of Tresidder on Monday. “We essentially want to shed light on the Palestinian essence in a way that hasn’t been done before at Stanford,” said sophomore Tanya Haj-Hassan, who organized the display of the exhibition at Stanford. “We want to open the eyes of the Stanford population to the spirit of a vibrant people and culture in the context of their unique history through these beautiful photographs.”

The exhibit consists of 12 photos — those representing the “mind” of Palestine are designed to reflect the everyday life of the ordinary Palestinian citizen; the photos representing the “body” are meant to convey the uniqueness and historical significance of the Palestinian landscape; and the photos representing Palestine’s “soul” show the struggle the Palestinian people have undertaken in their quest for self-determination.

“When people look at Palestine, they often overlook the amazing culture and beautiful landscape that exists there,” Haj-Hassan said. “We hope this exhibition shows students the human side of the Palestinian people.”

The exhibit’s three photographers are Steve Sabella, Luke Powell and Andrew Courtney, all renowned for their work.

The exhibit is organized by Al-PHAN (Palestinian Humanities and Arts Now), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting Palestinian artists. The “Mind, Body and Soul” display has traveled throughout the United States since January 2003. On campus, the Muslim Students Awareness network (MSAN) is running the exhibit.

“The organizers of Al-PHAN said that this exhibit has been one of the bright spots of their movement to make people aware of the Palestinian culture and history,” Haj-Hassan said.

The exhibition kicks off the start of Palestinian Awareness Month. Part of the exhibition’s purpose is to show Stanford students a new dimension of Palestinian life.

“Few people — especially at Stanford — acknowledge and understand the Palestinian culture,” Haj-Hassan said. “Sadly, it is a culture that is being devastated.”

Haj-Hassan added that MSAN does not intend for the pictures to generate any sort of controversy.

“The photos are designed to show the truth,” he said. “It’s hard to talk to about the Palestinian people and ignore what they are going through.”

MSAN member Omar Shakir, a freshman, predicted that the Stanford community would react positively to the exhibition.

“It should open people’s eyes and show them the human side of this conflict,” he said.

Just out of curiosity, will they be showing the dead pregnant woman living in Palestine who was killed this week just because she was Jewish? Isn't that part of the "human side" of this conflict as well? Oops, guess that woman was just a pig or a monkey to some of these fanactics for justice in palestine, so her death probably wasn't part of the equation anyway.

So much of Stanford is now a joke. I was at a Stanford graduation a few years ago for the "make your own major" department. Degrees were granted in "Asian Queer Studies" and "Social Responsibility and Inter-cultural Awareness." Obviously the parents who paid the tuition for this trash are as crazy as their kids.

Looking at that pic of the subhuman holding-up 'human remains', is beyond revolting. There's no doubt in my mind now that such filth needs *removal* permanently, from this earth. Subhumans, all. And my apologies to cats, dogs and pigs etc.
