I hate to say this, but no longer mothers and children should be alone. An armed male relative should accompany from now on. Not that having her husband or whoever would have helped much in this instance.

I know that this is their home, but I haven't for the life of me been able to fathom WHY anyone would live in such a dangerous place.

If mom had been armed I don't know if that would have helped. She may have been able to take out a bad guy or two, though.
