Is he referring to the "very detailed description" that included the phrase "beyond the Pillars of Heracles?"

Presumably. When that was said, I expect it would be the same as if we were to say today, "Just north of New York." (and, there will come a time when the exact location of New York isn't known)

This location is always said to be the area of Gibralter. Could it refer to somewhere else, perhaps something near Egypt?
