I understand what you are saying, and there may be some truth to it. I'm certainly very cynical -- I admit that. But a lot of this is perception, and I think professional communicators can appeal to both sides simultaneously (I don't say that as a compliment). An example:

Stahl says Bush reminds her of Reagan. A Conservative hears that and says, "Stahl is coming around. She sees that Bush is great President. He's clearly in the same league and Ronald the Great. Maybe there's hope for Leslie."

A Leftist hears the same quote and says, "Tell it Leslie! Bush is every bit as dumb as Reagan. Corrupt too. I remember Iran-Contra! I remember how out to lunch ol' Ronnie was! Yup! Stahl has Bushie pegged -- he's every bit as big a failure as Reagan!"

Leslie Stahl is no John Stossel.

please see #16 and #19..you both may be right....or, possibly, I'm NOT as cynical as I should be, which, in itself, may be a good thing...

"I'm hearing echoes, not of his father's presidency, but of Ronald Reagan's," Stahl said.

I voted for him in part because I hoped, with reason, that that would be the case.

Both convinced the nation they were "staying the course" even
as they changed their positions, she said, citing Reagan's
six tax hikes despite a pledge not to and now Bush's emphasis
that the U.N. help out in Iraq.

But not like Clinton's repeated promises, during the '92 campaign,
to lower taxes then spiked 'em in '93.... right Lesley?
