EDITORS: Fellow editors, reserve June 1-2 on your calendars for a free seminar on diversity to be held at Marist College in Poughkeepsie.
The board of directors of the New York State Associated Press Association is pleased to announce this year's spring seminar, "Diversity: How improving the diversity of your staff and news coverage can build your newspaper's readership," returns to the Marist College campus.
The NYSAP board has agreed to cover the costs of an overnight stay June 1 on the Marist campus, (participants will have to cover the costs of a Monday night meal) as well as all costs associated with the June 2 seminar.
Focusing attention on improved diversity in coverage and staffing not only is the right thing to do, but it can help bring new readers to our newspapers at a time of generally declining readership. The day will include useful workshop sessions featuring some of the top reporters and editors in the state, a working lunch and an opportunity to participate in a diversity audit.
Here are the details:
Tuesday, June 1: Travel day and overnight stay for free in a Marist College dorm room.
Room registration deadline: May 21.
Wednesday, June 2: 8:15 a.m. _ 9 a.m.
Registration, continental breakfast 9 a.m. _ 10:15 a.m.
Welcome. What do you mean by diversity? Does diversity mean more than race? How you can use census data, marketing statistics and old-fashioned shoe leather to develop a better understanding of the diverse people living in your community.
10:15 a.m. _ 10:30 a.m. Break (coffee, snacks)
10:30 a.m. _ 11:45 a.m. How to conduct a diversity survey of your own newspaper on a regular basis.
11:45 a.m. _ 1:45 p.m. Lunch with speaker. How you can help play a role in reshaping newsroom culture so that it welcome diverse voices on staff, in print and online.
1:45 p.m. _ 3 p.m. Best practices: Newspapers tell their success stories on building diversity of staff and coverage.
To register for the free seminar, please send a fax to Debi Foland at 518-438-5891, with the name of the newspaper, the names of the people attending, and whether they need a room at Marist for the night of June 1.
For more information or with questions, please call Debi Foland at 518-458-7821.
