No kidding! That guy (I nearly said "kid") is going to a mech unit just to get back in the war. Now that is one dedicated trooper.
My old team sergeant's son is in the 325. When he came back he was committed to his career, but he said the kids in his team and (later) squad were really PO'd and angry at the Prez, etc. Most of them are gone now, but oddly, they didn't go out as much as he expected. They went to other units, changed MOSes, went to language school or tried out for Rangers or SF.
The nature of an infantry unit is that most of the men in it do one honorable term and then go back home. After all we need lots of privates and far fewer NCOs. So nobody really minds if most of the privates hang up their web gear after one term, as long as there are enough future sergeants staying in.
I think the time will come when the structure of the infantry changes and we have more sergeants and fewer privates, as smaller elements get tougher and more complex missions that they have to carry out independently. Regardless, we can be proud of how these young men carried out the tasks set before them.
