U.S. flagbearer booed off stage Multiculturalism day at Wagar High. Thought to be protest against Iraq war, jeering leaves Grade 9 student in tears

A U.S.-born teenager carrying a U.S. flag in a multiculturalism parade was booed off stage and reduced to tears by fellow students at Wagar High School on Thursday, in an apparent protest against the Iraq war.

A year ago today, the U.S. led the invasion of Iraq.

A parade of flags representing every nationality at the school - 39, this year - is an annual event at Wagar, the most ethnically diverse high school in the English Montreal School Board.

"During the parade, when the American flag (was) walked by, quite a large number of students booed, which was very upsetting to the student carrying the flag," said Juanita Meikle, a parent who is chairperson of Wagar's governing board.

The girl, a Grade 9 student, "was very upset. She was crying," Meikle said.

No other flag was jeered.

This young lady needs to move to Western Canada. I have relatives in Alberta and they'd just as soon be American. They are big supporters of Bush. If they had their way, they'd just dump the Eastern half.

Editorial: Appalling treatment

Is it fair to boo a U.S.-born Grade 9 girl for carrying an American flag across a stage during a school multiculturalism parade?

Is it fair to insult and use obscene gestures against 11-year-old peewee hockey players from the Boston area because you don't like the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq?

Is there no limit to some Canadians' anti-American anger?

Those questions are being asked again on the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq after a teenager was in tears after being loudly booed as she carried the American flag in a parade of 39 flags representing every nationality in the school.

No other flag was jeered at Wager High School, described as the most ethnically diverse in the English Montreal School Board. The 300-student school is in the heavily Jewish neighbourhood of Cote St. Luc.

Last March, U.S. peewee hockey players, aged 11 and 12, were jeered during a four-day trip to Montreal. People booed their national anthem, made rude gestures toward them, and pounded on the side of their bus.

Canadians upset with the U.S. role in Iraq should target their protests at the Bush administration.

But targeting young children, or any individual American, is just plain wrong and insulting — and shows a level of disrespect that should be appalling to all Canadians.

YOu forgot the third. The Liberal preservation called South Ontario. It despises the rest of Engish Canada no less than Quebec. By harvesting their votes there, Liberals are capable of running the whole of Canada, both English and French.
