Two Terrorists Blow Themselves Up To Avoid Arrest

KHANKALA, 21 February, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - In Ingushetia (Russia's autonomous republic in the North Caucasus), two militants blew themselves up during a shootout with police officers, a source in the Russian Interior Ministry's provisional press centre in the North Caucasus said on Saturday.

"On Friday afternoon, police officers carrying out a special anti-terror operation in Nazran (Ingushetia's capital city) were shot at by armed men driving past in a Zhiguli car," the source told RIA Novosti. As a result, he added, one of the police officers was wounded.

The police chased the attackers and soon spotted one of them walking along a street. "He put up armed resistance to the police, then blew up an unidentified explosive device and died from the explosion-inflicted wounds," the representative of the Interior Ministry's press centre said.

The second bandit was found on the territory of the local building materials market. He also resisted arrest and exploded an improvised bomb. Preliminarily, the police identified the man as Khaukhayev, with investigators currently establishing the rest of his personal details, the source added.

He also said that in the course of the special anti-terror operation police officers found an arms cache in a private house near Nazran. The cache contained four Mukha grenade launchers, 45 rounds for different types of grenade launches, F-1 grenade, about 6,000 cartridges of various calibre and an improvised explosive device.

The fact that these extremists are so willing to die makes taking an old-fashioned law enforcement approach to terrorism pretty useless. In fact, to insist on treating Islamic terrorists as criminals, to be punished and rehabilitated after committing their crimes, really is suicide.
