2500 yr-old necklace found in cave

ISRAELI archaeologists excavating caves near the Dead Sea have discovered a rare find – a woman's 2500-year-old fashion accessories.

The hoard of jewellery, a makeup kit and a small mirror apparently belonged to Jews who had returned from exile in Babylon in the 6th century BC, said Tsvika Tsuk, chief archaeologist for the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

"This find is very rare. Both for the richness of the find and for that period, it is almost unheard of," Tsuk said today.

Hidden under a stone-like accumulation of sediment thrown up by a nearby spring, archaeologists using metal detectors found a necklace made of 130 beads of semiprecious stones and gold, a scarab, an agate medallion of Babylonian origin and a silver pendant with an engraved crescent moon and pomegranates.

They also found what appears to be a makeup kit containing an alabaster bowl for powders, a stick to apply the makeup and a bronze mirror.

Tsuk said they also discovered a pagan stamp showing a Babylonian priest bowing to the moon.

"These finds confirm the (biblical) accounts of Jews returning from exile in Babylon," Tsuk said.

When the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar conquered the Kingdom of Judah in 597 BC he took many Jews into exile with him. These Jews and their descendants were later allowed to return by the Persian monarch Cyrus in 538 BC.

Tsuk said the find shows that there was a wealthy and flourishing community of returnees living in the area at the time.

"These are not the belongings of a simple person," he said.

The find was made by a joint team from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv. The team has been excavating caves near the Dead Sea for the last three years.

actually, I usually don't post anything unless I feel it is breaking news. I've probably been posting BN articles since before you were on FR. (I had an FR account older even than this current one.)

It's still your discretion though, move'em where you like 'em. Not all BN has to be the latest in politics. It broadens the interest level for FR for a bit of "alternate" Breaking News, every now and then.

Which, of course, is my opinion.

this is pretty blatantly not breaking news.

Interesting article, though. Looks like Jewish girls were into makeup and jewelry from earliest times!

PS: The fact that the leader of AFSCME Union has stated publicly that Dean is Nuts is certainly to be considered Breaking News.

You may not realize how rare and significant it is when such a leader makes such comments public. AFSCME just did a hit on Dean.

It is apparent that the AFSCME leader told Dean that if he didn't pull out of Wisconsin he would hit him in a public and personal way, right between the eyes.

While you singularly may not understand the significance in this public hit on Dean, I suspect other Freepers would be very interested in seeing first-hand how the Unions force the Democrats to toe the line.

Do what they say or your career is over. Deans career is over, and Kerry better toe the line, or else.

Please consider restoring this to BN. It is a warning to Kerry and other Dems. It is Unionocracy in action.

2500 yr-old necklace found in cave

Did she earn the necklace by flashing at Mardi Gras?

OOOPS! sorry, I was referring to the "Dean is Nuts" story, which I did NOT post after all (since it was already posted by someone else).

Please consider moving that "Dean is Nuts" Story to BN (whoever posted it). It would make good radio talk show prep.

The book of Ezra and Nehemiah would be a witness of what was taken out of Babylon.

Some of which still remains to this day.

Interesting how old Saddam rebuilt Babylon everything in place except the Ishtar Gate which is in a German museum and the "Hanging Gardens" which Saddam sought worldwide to have duplicated.
