I'm seriously questioning having children.

Here, have a beer instead! ;-)

But let's remember there are more people in this country who would help a child, rather than hurt a child.

*** You're right. That's why you're a diva!

The problem with never talk to strangers is that if a child needs help, or is lost they are afraid to ask anyone for help.

It is a problem and a hard one to explain to young children. There is a huge difference between a stranger approaching a child and a child approaching a stranger. If a child who's needing adult help approaches a stranger, chances are that stranger will be a "good" person. If a child must choose between a woman and a man stranger, instruct them to go the the woman. Nothing against all the good men out there, but "stranger danger" women are almost unheard of. Better yet is the mother with children in tow.

Right! For my young children I tell them this on most things: God gave me you. My job is to protect you and love you. Your job is to listen to me and trust me. While you are young I will be making alot of decisions for you, but it will not always be this way.

While you are young, you are to stay close to me ,if you get lost look for someone like a Mommy to help you.

Do not talk to strange looking people. If someone tries to do go somewhere scream, bite, kick and yell.. lets practice that. IF you get lost from me, and someone wants to give you candy or toys.. say no and tell me And I will buy you 5 times whatever they offered you.

If I am with you you may speak to whomever you wish, and I will be there to help you.

It I say it is time to go... we go. no questions.

You will need to trust me to make the right decisions for you until you have the skills you need to make them yourself. That day is not so far away.

Thanks for posting this info. I would like to add one, I either saw this on tv yesterday or read it here.

There was a couple (man and his wife, I think) who abducted young women by pulling over to the side of a street with a road map spread out in full view, asking for directions. This obviously sends a message that they are lost, and in need of assistance. That is how they would lure their victims.

My children are grown, but this is one I've passed on to them. If someone needs directions, they can go to a business or other public place. Unfortunately, our kids just can't afford to be good samaritans anymore.

That's pretty much what I have told my 5 year old.

I have also told her that if we get seperated in the store she is to go to the cash register and tell the person there - never, ever leave the store because I will not be outside, I will still be inside looking for her.

Fortunately, so far it has neverhappened.

So sad, but so true.

For just this reason if I am lost I will go to a business and seek directions, not someone on the street - for both their protection and my own, particularly if I have my daughter in the car with me.

"Let's hope every Freeper with children prints it and follows it."

I just did... I also told my kids that if anyone ever tries to take them somewhere, to scream as loudly as they can, "YOU ARE NOT MY DADDY!!!", and to scream it over and over again to get other people's attention.

Good for you!! I'm hoping that the Mod will leave this in a visable spot long enough for more Freepers to see it.

Your post speaks to the first rule of child safety, and that is avoidance of dangerous situations. Unfortunately, the events in Florida were set in motion when Carlie lied to the adult in charge about having parental permission to walk home. To compound that misfortune, Carlie had been left in the care of an adult who was willing to accept Carlie's word rather than conferring with her parents before letting her go. The first rule that a child must learn is that parental rules are there for a reason and they must be followed whether the child likes it or not. The second rule (for the parents) is that your child should never be left in the care of an adult who is not aware of and willing to comply with your basic rules.
