[history]
January 22, 2004 -- FOX beat out the broadcast networks in covering a news event for the first time in its history.
Fox's coverage Tuesday of President Bush's State of the Union Address, anchored by Shepard Smith, snared 9.2 million viewers from 9 to 10:30 p.m. - compared to NBC (9 million), CBS (8.5 million) and ABC (7.2 million), according to Nielsen data.

Y'all - this was the Fox Network, not the FoxNews Channel they're talking about...
But still - it's way cool that the 'Big-3' got smoked.

I think this had more to do with American Idol being the lead in than Fox Networks coverage.

To: Keith in Iowa
Are you saying the NY Post is incorrect? "...anchored by Shepard Smith"...he's on fox news channel. I would highly doubt fox network beat out fox news and that the post got it that wrong.

Hmmm - this might be some insight into Rather's comment the other day that soon the broadcast networks might not be carrying the SOTU anymore. He probaably gets this info way before we do.

WOW, considering the number of households that don't get cable or DISH this is HUGH!
People are voting with their feet and the "Big 3" are STILL blind and in denial that their liberal bias is crushing them.

The Democrat Party is in total denial that 911 ever occurred. So would I be, if I knew I was directly responsible for being the direct cause of so many innocent Americans and military personnel being slaughtered and wounded on our own and foreign shores! The Media is in total denial about its liberal bias and it is not only the alphabet networks that are dying. Newspaper readership is down dramatically except for the Wall Street Journal. They just don't get it. It is going to get worse for them (The Demcrats & Media). The Democrat Party has given the American people two certified mental cases as "viable" candidates for POTUS, Howard Dean and Wesley Clark. Dean has already imploded and is toast. Clark is not far behind. The American people will come to realize that this current Democrat Party needs to be put out of its misery by being destroyed at the ballot box this year (2004)!

Does anyone out there have the numbers for C-Span, CNBC, MSNBC and of course, the Clinton/Communist Network?

Fox Rocks and Brit Hume rules!
To: kattracks
The LAST think I want to hear is Jennings, Rather, Blitzer, et al explaining to me what the President really said.
I only believe Brit, Fred Barnes, and Charles Krauthammer.

I'm saying people are reading something into this that's not there...it does not say FoxNews channel's coverage beat the big 3, it says Fox - and, since I watched FoxNews channel's coverage, I know that Shep was nowhere to be seen, because he was doing the coverage on what he calls "Big Fox" - the network, not the news channel.

That's the order I would rank them as far as quality of coverage and analysis. I thought Brokaw was pretty fair when he didn't let Wesley Clark get away with some of his spin. Brokaw may not be balanced, but he's a lot better than Rathers or that totally sold-out ABC.

I happen to be channel surfing and saw Wesley getting a grillin' from Brokaw and I broke out in laughter. I was waiting for Brokaw to yell "Drop and give me 50!"

Yes, but it was Fox News' staff and FOX network has no national newscast. Many stations have a 10pm(EST) news, but that's it.
To: kattracks
The rank each of the broadcast networks came in for SOTU doesn't surprise me. ABC is in the basement in all departments. The only time CBS is on top is during regular primetime. NBC has been a news leader as long as I can remember.

That's one reason I like the headstart on the late night news FOX has. Here the FOX station has their hour long newscast at 9:00 MT. They target those who tend to go to bed earlier and cover local and national news all at once.

In case you didn't know, the Fox Network provided live coverage of the SOTU speech, anchored by Shep Smith. Shep had no - repeat - no part in FoxNews Channel's SOTU coverage.

This is what's so amazing. Why would anybody turn into a Fox station to watch SOTU? The only answer I can figure out is that is when 24 airs. I know my VCR was set for that time.
To: kattracks
Unfortunately, the untalented tool Shep Smith was at the helm. Brit Hume is my anchor God, Shep Smith is an idiot from Hades. His inability to read a prompter is distrurbing. And his general commentary is assy.

American Idol auditions were on at 8 pm and I think that led in the 8:00 time slot- maybe people did not change the channel.

I thought Brokaw was pretty fair when he didn't let Wesley Clark get away with some of his spin.Well, I'll tell you this: I watched (just to see how Ted would be) Nightline the night of the SOTU and TED let Weasley Clarke Spin the speech into oblivion. I should find the transcript and post it, as he wasn't on that long, but it was that bad. I know better than to watch that B.S. that late as I get rather irritated, but I wanted to see who he had on and it was awful.

Shepherd Smith is an anchor for Fox news, which is normally shown on the Fox News Channel. When big events occur, Fox news appears on the Fox broadcast network.
I saw him on channel 5.

People are voting with their feet and the "Big 3" are STILL blind and in denial that their liberal bias is crushing them. My mother gets upset about stories on ABC, then calls me expecting me to get all upset. It really gets her goat when I (usually) chuckle and tell her the real facts.

Yes, it was the FOX Network. (There's no way a cable channel gets 9.2m viewers - doesn't happen). There is no separate news division for FOX Broadcast (yet), so the FOX News anchors appear in a separate studio and appear under the FOX Broadcast logo.
