McAuliffe Says Democrats Are In The Best Shape They've Ever Been Tue Jan 20 2004 10:39:37 ET
DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe asked on CNN if the direction of the Democratic Party will determine the direction of the party.
McAuliffe said: "Clearly, whoever the nominee of the Democratic Party will -- and I am -- no one in America wants a nominee more than I do. We're in the best shape we've ever been in. Millions in the bank, new headquarters, new voter files. I need a nominee, no question about it. But that nominee will then have one message. He will become the messenger, and it's his message that won the primaries.
"And that will become the message as we head forth March 10 all the way to November 2. That will give us six months. My job is to make sure that we're unified, we have money in the bank like we've never had before. And come the morning of March 10, we're off as one organized, energized and ready to go."

They already don't have the House, Senate, or presidency. They're set to lose seats in the House due to Texas redistricting. They're set to lose seats in the Senate due to southern Democrats retiring. Their eventual nominee won't have a prayer against Bush. Yeah, they're in great shape.

Except that his basic assumption - there will be a clear nominee by March 10 who can then turn on GW for the next six months - was thrown out the window last night. A divided convention is a much more likely occurance, which means that the so-called unified message won't be ready until late summer.

I keep thinking that McAuliffe is going to be taking a perp walk before November. I fully expect him to be found performing a Kozlowski on the DNC.

Whoops. Now that I got the belly laugh out of my system, I need to change my answer.
It has to be "Yep, they're in the best shape they've ever been."

Good point. McAwful doesn't want Dean to be the party nomination. With Dean pulling in a dismal 3rd place finish in Iowa, only brings hope for McAwful, and the Clintons.

McAulliffe: He (the nominee) will become the messenger, and it's his message that won the primaries.
Let's look at that statement with respect to what happened in Iowa from both sides, that is, from the perspect of the losers as well as the winners.
First, what was the message of the losers?
Gephardt and Kucinich both must have failed Economics 101, but the farmers in Iowa apparently have to pass the lab for Economics 101, that is, they have to stay in business. The Democrats in the Iowa Caucuses turned Gephardt and Kucinich into the Iowa Carcasses because they rejected socialism.
Why did the voters reject Dean? I posit they rejected him because he had no real message. His shrill, piercing voice hasn't changed since I first met him in New Haven in September 1967. All he did then and all he does now is attack individuals without facts. He thinks that being different is enough. When he did make statements of values (as opposed to his tripe about taking back the American flag from the right-wing in America, most notably Rush Limbaugh), the Democrats in Iowa didn't like what they heard.
Example 1: The Iowa Democrats didn't like hearing him say we're no better off now that Saddam Hussein has been captured than we were before.
Example 2: The Iowa Democrats didn't like hearing Dean claim President Bush had prior knowledge of 9/11 and did nothing.
Example 3: The Iowa Democrats didn't like hearing Dean claim we went to war for oil.
Example 4: The Iowa Democrats didn't appreciate Dean losing his temper and ordering an Iowan to sit down and shut up.
If McAuliffe recognizes these facts (which I doubt), the Democrats in Iowa are in good shape. They may have been attempting to take their party back from the radical, looney left.
What was the message that Edwards and Kerry broadcast? I'm not really certain, and I doubt the average Iowa Democrat is either. But both men acted like statesmen. They listened to both talk in measured tones and use reasonably factuall bases for their discussions. In short, the Democrats in Iowa could see Kerry and Edwards as president.
The only real message I saw on television (from Boston) and in the Des Moines Register from Kerry that seemed to resonate was that Kerry was a war hero, who saved the life of Mr. Razzman. That's a good story, and it will sell as long as we have troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. But I think the Democrats in New Hampshire will want to know where Kerry intends to take the country from January 2005 to January 2009 rather than where he was 30-odd years ago.
Now that the field has narrowed down to Clark, Dean, Kerry, and Edwards as the primary players with Lieberman and Sharpton for comic relief, I predict:
1. Dean will either explode (as he is prone to do) or implode (because only the hard core will continue to donate to his campaign). In either case, he will fade away.
2. There will be nastiness behind the scenes concerning General Clark's military service and LT Kerry's military service. I predict Clark will be the loser in that battle, but Kerry will be wounded in that skirmish.
3. Clark will attack both Kerry and Edwards as being lawyers. Kerry hasn't really practiced law in over 20 years. Edwards is an ambulance chaser. (While the average person claims to hate ambulance chasers, most Americans will not reject being a part of a frivilous class action lawsuit, so it remains to be seen if that will hurt either.)
4. Clark will attack Kerry asking what bill is known as the Kerry-(Smith) Act. The answer is there is none. In two decades in the U.S. Senate, Ketchup Kid hasn't done much. Edwards will not play in that cesspool, but will point to what he has accomplished in less than one term.
I predict that Edwards will be the nominee -- as long as he keeps above the mud.
