Congratulations, sir!
Welcome your recruits by telling them that Jack Webb and R. Lee Ermy were
portraying kinder-and-gentler DIs! Yeah, those USMC DIs!
That should straighten up a few of them!
If you haven't yet, you might want to read "Making The Corps" by Thomas Ricks.
Although it's a Marine Corps experience, I'm sure it gives good insights about
the work you're about to undertake.

Thank you all for your kind public words... I assure you all that I fully understand the awesome duties and responsibility with which I have been charged....
I humbly accept the awesome duty and responsibility of training America's sons and daughters from volunteers into warfighters. I fully understand and fully appreciate the role of the Drill Sergeant and I am proud to be among the ranks.
DRILL SERGEANT CREED.............
I am a Drill Sergeant
I will assist each individual in their efforts to become a highly motivated, well disciplined, physically and mentally fit soldier, capable of defeating any enemy on today's modern battlefield.
I will instill pride in all I train. Pride in self, in the Army, and in Country.
I will insist that each soldier meets and maintains the Army standards of military bearing and courtesy, consistent with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
I will lead by example, never requiring a soldier to attempt any task I would not do myself.
But first, last, and always, I am an American Soldier. Sworn to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.
I am a Drill Sergeant.
HOOOOOAH !!!!

In my youth I was taught to say sir and m'am when addressing elders. I will NEVER forget the lesson I was "taught" when I first said yes sir to my first DS at Fort Dix back in '71. Some things you take with you to the grave.LOL
