Bronze Artifacts Found Off Egypt's Coast

Sunday January 18, 2004 9:01 PM

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - A French archaeological team has retrieved more than 1,000 bronze artifacts, including statues and busts of Pharoanic gods and goddesses, from the site of an ancient port city off Egypt's northern coast, officials said Sunday.

The artifacts were found during archaeological surveys near Alexandria last month and date to the 3rd through 5th centuries B.C. Among them are tools and containers used in religious rituals, said Mohamed Abdel Maqsoud, a senior official with Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The artifacts were found at the site of the ancient port of Heracleion, which is now under water. The team was led by French archaeologist Franck Goddio.

The most impressive item is a stone bust of an unidentified person with long hair, Zahi Hawass, head of the council, said in a written statement. Hawass said the person might be the Nile god, Hapy.

All of the artifacts have been removed to be cleaned and restored, the Supreme Council's statement said.

The French team was working in Abu Qir Bay off Alexandria. It previously found the 2,000-year-old ruins of Cleopatra's palace and the flagship of Napoleon's fleet, L'Orient, which sank Aug. 1, 1798, in a battle with the British fleet of Adm. Horatio Nelson.

Sounds really fascinating. When I was a kid, about 11 years old, my father got stationed at Wheelus Air Force Base near Tripoli, Libya. We were right on the coast, and used to go snorkeling all the time. The place was loaded with ancient pottery, and once I even found an old muzzle-loading pistol that had washed ashore.

Between Legend and Reality

A colossal statue of the god Hapi in the sunken city of Heracleion.

I was also curious just how deep these finds were. According to the article the diggers(?) are working in 18 - 20 feet of water roughly 4 miles offshore from Abu Qir.

Some of the Med. coastline is sinking, and some of it is rising.

In N. Africa, Israel, and parts of Italy, some ancient coastal cities are now underwater. In Turkey, Syria and other parts of Italy some ancient coastal cities are now high and dry, far from water.

No, Algore, sealevel is not rising, it's land-levels that are not static. Some are rising, some are falling and some remain the same over long periods.

I have never given it much thought, but you're right of course. I recall reading a piece(several actually) about a "port" city found high in the Andes Mountains. Now that's some rise!
