No kidding...

If an American had a modest nest egg/investments, they could get a part time job in Mexico and live like a king.

Does VC mind me shackin' up on Baja by the sea?

"Can we Muricanos apply for Mexican benefits?"

Check on any street corner, any Southwestern town, USA.

Have $50 in hand - it's called a GREEN CARD.

Fox is a loser, and Mexico could have had a lot more friendship from the US had he not been too weak to even get his left-wing legislature to issue a statement of condolence and support for us right after 9/11.

However, I hope this new immigration bill does something to energize him and secure some kind of cooperation from Mexico. One of the reasons illegal immigration is so hard to stop is that Mexico basically permits it, and even with all the security considerations after 9/11 (since many of those crossing Mexico's border lately have not been Mexicans, but Arabs and others) it has done little to crack down because it is afraid of losing all those lovely dollars from its immigrant population.

I hope Bush, who is meeting with Fox next week, uses this to get some real cooperation from Mexico. It would be a first, if he does. Mexico is an overtly socialist state that hates the US and drives its own people away because its typical socialist corruption and stagnation, and getting Mexico to cooperate on anything is a real long shot.

I forgot to mention that it is obvious that law means nothing to our elected officials so the law could be tweaked to allow Fox to run for the US Presidency.

I've been thinking awhile that Fox must have something on Bush. Bush has been kissing up to him entirely too much.

He's dreaming. Based on the reactions so far from Congress AND the American public, he'll be lucky if he gets anything at all.

The talking point truisms are predominating news articles without any reflection or criticism.

Our watchdog media has descended on day labor sites throughout the country to get critical opinions of this proposal from illegal aliens. Of course they have the same opinion as Presidente Fox.

Back here in the real world, anyone voicing outright opposition simply isn't being interviewed.

This is insane.

Fox is not insane, but our leaders are acting that way. Wages for once lucrative construction jobs have stagnated or dropped because these jobs are being taken over by illegals. How can a hard working, blue-collar, U.S. citizen and family man compete with workers who sleep eight to a trailer on the floor with sleeping bags? Meanwhile, most of their wages are sent to Mexico. It is NOT true that illegals are doing the jobs that Americans won't do. It is true that they are doing these jobs for less than American workers are willing to accept. Does that mean the American workers are greedy and lazy? No!! It means that they are being undermined by a government that has completely turned a blind eye to their plight. It's way past time to clamp down hard on businesses that hire illegals.

Plan of Bush will be long term, of two to three years: specialists

The migratory reform announced by the president of the United States, George W. Bush, will have an impact limited in the future immediate of more than eight million undocumented immigrants who already work in that country.

Bush announced Wednesday a migratory reform that would temporarily legalize the situation of undocumented million that reside in their country, half of Mexican them, days before traveling to Mexico for the special Summit of the Américas.

During the annual meeting of ambassadors and consuls of Mexico in the chancellery, investigators of both countries showed their skepticism with respect to the estadunidense proposal, few hours after the chancellor Luis Ernesto Derbez gave the welcome him.

There is "a great devil" in the words of Bush: "one is a president speaking of whom it corresponds to him to the Congress" to solve, it affirmed Demetrios Papademetriou, director of the Migration Policy Institute.

"one Requests to the Congress that, but did not say that it would send an initiative" as well as it either did not establish a date limit to sign the possible law, since has done it in the fiscal subject and of health, added pointed Doris Meissner, codirector of the same institute and ex- commissioner of the Service of Migration and estadunidense Naturalization (WITHOUT).

"the sent signals are of long term", said Meissner. "Probably it will be a debate for next the 2 or 3 years", previó the expert in migratory subjects.

The proposal of the estadunidense president, who requires the approval of the Congress, would grant visas of work of three years, renewable by an indetermine period, to those who or has a work in the United States or to foreigners supported by an employer that does not find to a estadunidense to fill that use.

The three years "will be renewable, but they will have an aim", said Bush, that it insisted on its opposition to a massive amnesty for the undocumented people.

For Demetrios Papademetriou, the success of the proposal will depend on which the "10 million illegal workers are attracted the program".

Agustín Field of broom, Superior investigator of the Research center and Studies on Social Anthropology, CIESAS, made a warning with respect to the project of Bush: "the power of the pattern during three years, since the stay of the worker (in the country) depends on him, can cause abuses".

The possibility that exists in addition the pattern sells permissions and certifications of stay, according to Field of broom.

Rafael Fernandez de Castro, director of the magazine Foreign Affairs in Spanish, applauded that the desatora proposal "the migratory agenda", but declared "pessimist like so that in this year" is some result reflected in the migratory laws of the United States.

"I do not see any incentive in the democratic congressmen in giving to Bush in this electoral year a medallita him", said Fernandez.

The specialists agreed in indicating that the greater advantage is than the migratory debate has returned to the table of the White House.

One would be a program that, without a doubt, would mainly benefit the Mexicans, by the simple fact of being the majority population between the undocumented people, according to Papademetriou.

Numbers of the School of the North Border establish that up to 310.000 Mexican undocumented people cross every year towards the United States, whereas the legal ones ascend to 370.000.

The speech of Bush "made partially happy (to all the involved actors) although also partially unfortunate (...) all obtained things but not sufficient them like being excited ", it clarified the specialist.

Next blue collar target is the transportation industry. Drivers of all sorts. Bush's plan will allow them to get US driver's license privileges.

Drive a forklift? Make deliveries around town? You're next.

Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said officials from both countries had already begun studying the proposal and would discuss it at a Summit of the Americas conference next week in the northern city of Monterrey.

I do hope that Derbez, et al keep us apprised of this situation. I would hate to think that the U.S. would hinder any of Mexico's grand plans.

President Fox discussed migration reform with President Bush

040107/02

January 7, 2004, Los Pinos. Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada this morning held a fifteen minute telephone conversation with United States President George W. Bush.

President Bush confirmed his administration's interest in progressing toward the establishment of facilities that will enable legal, safe, and orderly migration between both countries, and today will present the general outline of a proposal.

President Bush told Mr. Fox of the important role played by Mexico and its government in the debate on immigration reform.

Mexico's leader gave information on his telephone call with the United States President during the ceremony to restart the 2003-2004 school year, held at the No. 1 "Social Participation" primary school:

"Of course, first he sent me warm greetings for all Mexicans, especially all Mexicans who are there, in the United States, and acknowledging the effective and enormous contribution made by these Mexicans there, in the United States.

And that is why he wants and is going to make the proposal, the proposal of a migration plan to clearly acknowledge the value of these Mexicans working there, in the United states.

And he is going to acknowledge (them) ensuring that everyone working there -and that is what Mexican men and women are doing- are legally recognized. So that they -then- can have all the rights all workers in that country have, even if they are not American nationals or lack documentation at this time.

So that all their labor and human rights can be respected, but so that they can also come and go to Mexico, so they can be near their families.

As you know, they can't do so now because afterwards, when they want to return, they face serious difficulties. So, it is a highly interesting program, we are going to wait for details. It is a program that we -President Bush and President Fox- have been working on since before we were formally presidents of our respective countries.

We have been working on it since he was governor and President Vicente Fox was governor; we have been working on it since he was president-elect and I was president-elect; and we have continued to work on it over these three years; it has been the main item in bilateral relations."
