Blast from the Past: Gibbs Takes Over in D.C.

Naww, we went through the motions of interviewing Denny Green and Ray Rhodes (an unfair rigamarole to put those good folks thru, imho) to keep from facing the wrath of the PC NFL folks.

I was reading the articles on the Washington ComPost's website this morning, and actually, Ray Rhodes may have been the pick if Joe Gibbs didn't take the job. There's a good article detailing the courtship dance between Dan Snyder and Mr. Gibbs that led to his return, based on comments from anonymous insiders present during the proceess, and Rhodes is named as being Snyder's first choice. We would have had some entertaining press conferences if nothing else!

If I were a black assistant in the NFL, I'd openly lobby teams to interview me as the token. Fly my family and myself in, put us up in a 5 star hotel, show us around town, feed us some good meals. We'll get together and talk a little football (but I'm not answering any questions I don't feel like) give me 5k in spending money and send us back home.

On the press conference issue, one more reason to root for the Eagles going to the Super Bowl. Big Fat Andy's idea of a press conference is:

Andy: We'll start off with the injuries....

Andy: The time is yours.

Press: Andy, how do you feel the offense preformed today?

Andy: I'm not going to answer that.

Press: Andy, what about the defense, can you speak to that?
Andy: I'm not going to answer that either.

Press: Any commentary on the Special Teams?

Andy: You'd have to talk to John Harbaugh about that... and he's off limits.

The international press corps will have NEVER come across something like this before!

I saw that, too...however, becuz of the unfairness of the PC process, I couldn't help but wonder if that wasn't just Snyder saying what he thought the NFL brass wanted to hear. Rhodes is a good enuff coach and all, but I'm not sure how excited the Skins' fan base wouldda been about him. I'm just thankful Gibbs decided to come back...I'm already jazzed about next season!!

Gee, you don't think you would be seeing all this hoopla for any other selection?!?! Fassel and Rhodes are fine enough, but around Redskinland, Coach Gibbs will always be the yardstick against which all others are measured! Hail to the Redskins!

LOL...perfect!! Sign me up, I'm part-Injun...what the NFL needs is more Native-American coaching interviewees!!
