On the day before Christmas, as we prepare to worship and to celebrate, let us not forget the plight of the Coptic Christians of Egypt -- a people who are, to put it with supreme understatement, less free than we are to practice the religion of one's own choosing.

I learned about the plight of these people from a woman who had enrolled in a class I was teaching. It was in 2001. I had never heard of dhimmitude before then.

Very few people know of this still.

Although castigated by Islamic extremists as agents of the West, Copts maintain cultural, linguistic, and religious traditions that long predate the advent of Egyptian Islam in A.D. 641.

"advent of Egyptian Islam", AKA the greedy plunder of a long-established Egyptian civilization and pre-Roman center of Christianity in the ancient world.
