Brown Road Home Struck By Gunfire

POSTED: 3:40 PM EST December 17, 2003 UPDATED: 4:21 PM EST December 17, 2003

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Serial shooting task force members on Wednesday linked another shooting to the bullet that killed a woman last month.

The bullet was recovered from a home at 901 Brown Rd. Monday after a report of a shot entering the house. The bullet was matched by ballistic evidence Wednesday to the one that killed Gail Knisley, 62, of Washington Court House, while she was riding in a car along Interstate 270.

The bullet entered the home, located across the street from Green Lawn Cemetery, sometime Monday, and was recovered from a second-floor bathtub by investigators the same day.

Franklin County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Steve Martin said it is unclear to investigators why the house on Brown Road was targeted.

The home in southwest Franklin County is about two miles from the Interstate 270 outerbelt, making a broader area for the shooting incidents. This was the third serial shooting to be linked since Nov. 25 -- the day Knisley died.

Neighbors told NewsChannel 4 that they heard three shots fired at about midnight. Two bullet holes were found in the home.

"I heard three shots. Bam! Bam! Bam!" neighbor Charles Hall said. "I pulled the curtain back, looked out and there was a car going south on Brown Road. It was dark. All I could see was tail lights. But it was going pretty fast."

The bullet was linked to 15 other shooting incidents that have occurred near the city's south outerbelt since May. Seven of the bullets have been linked by ballistic evidence, including one that Knisley.

The reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of a suspect or suspects in Knisley's death stands at $30,000.

Anyone with information in the shootings should call the shooting tip line at (614) 462-4646.

These clowns (driver and shooter) want to get caught.

And they will be.

Why won't they tell us what kind of gun is being used? (or have I missed something)

My sister had surgery today in Columbus, and I'm going up tomorrow to see her. I'm getting tired of having a sick feeling in my stomach everytime I make that trip up North.

Everyone I know that's driven through Ohio has been stopped for speeding. That was from 8 years ago, is that still the case?

I'm not sure about that but they do patrol heavily.

I beleve they are using the new spread spectrum radar units also.
To my knowledge the detector that can pick up these new radar units hasn't been invented yet.

Copy cats. More to be lost than gained by releasing the info.

Nonsense. HOw can a copycat copy the ballistic pattern? The idea is to produce the tip that breaks the case. The perp may have a relative or friend wondering if "he's the one," but not quite enough to call the tip line. If the police say it was a .270 bullet, and Harry knows that "crazy cousin Eddy" has a .270, he makes the call that cracks the case.

Remember the unibomber: the vaunted FBI profilers were 180* wrong. His brother turned him in when he recognized his writing style on the letters which the unibomber wrote...which the police released for public scrutiny.

They can't catch him fast enough. I hope the LEO's know more than they're letting on and have some solid leads. The shooter(s) will mess up, I just hope it's soon.

Lisa, prayers for your sister. I hope she is doing ok. Have a safe trip.

I've only had one speeding ticket. I drive no more than 7mph over the speed limit. I heard a while back that it's not worth an officers time to write a ticket if it's less than than that and it seems to work for me. :)

I'm surprised they aren't releasing the ballistics information too. It seems they have very little to go on. A tip from the public will most likely break the case, but only if we have information.

With the address and location mentioned in the article, along with the car traveling South.

Someone good with a computer or that knows the area should be able to figure out if the shots came from the driver's side,if the car "was" involved.

It's pretty clutzy to shoot out of a passenger window, even with a pistol, for a driver in most vehicles that are moving.I've had good, legal cause(animal control long ago with special State permission)to do so before and it's much easier from your own window while driving.A team seems more likely to shoot from either side of a vehicle.

With only one bullet found but three shots heard, the shooter sure doesn't seem to mind missing his targets very much.

If the police say it was a .270 bullet, and Harry knows that "crazy cousin Eddy" has a .270, he makes the call that cracks the case.

Actually, the scenario you describe would mainly lead to gun-owner harassment. If there is reason to suspect someone without knowing what sort of weaponry he has, then the fact that he has the right weapon is icing on the cake. To focus attention on those who happen to have the right weapon but whom there would otherwise be no reason to suspect is apt to produce false leads and possibly even result in the arrest and conviction of an innocent person.

Ballistics matching is in most cases far from an exact science. Depending upon the quality of a recovered bullet, there may be dozens or hundreds of firearms which would be a plausible ballistics match. If police grab a suspect based on other evidence, the fact that the suspect has one of the weapons that matches would provide substantial additional evidence. But if the police grab people whose guns happen to match, that proves nothing. After all, some such people are bound to be innocent.

When I've gone through that stretch in the last month or so, I go about 70 and cars are passing me like I'm standing still. Not a patrol car in sight, which is highly unusual for ANYWHERE in Ohio. I don't think they're worried about speeders at this point.

This shooter fits the profile of the young Islamic-radical convert doing the shooting rather than of a trained, professional sniper. 3 shots and only 1 hits house, all while placing the shooter's car into sight/jeopardy?! Come on...

My take was that the shooter(s) were shooting to hit cars, not drivers. If the latter, they are pretty poor shots. There are ways to be better I won't go into, especially if they are sitting still when they shoot.

I live in Columbus, and I drive like Steve McQueen. Depending on traffic, I usually run about 80. My radar detecter is a 17 year old Uniden. It works just fine.

It's very rare that I see a cop without getting LOTS of warning.

Depending on traffic, I usually run about 80. Generally, the outerbelt is like the Autobahn, so there's always plenty of other cars going just a little faster than me. The key is to be non-conspicuous and alert. I've got 1 ticket in the last 7 years. (Knock on wood!)

I'm NOT suggesting a dragnet by the police for owners of a particular caliber. They could do that already, on the quiet, without informing the general population of the caliber.

I'm suggesting that the perp may (like the Unibomber) have someone related to him who is suspicious, based on comments, travel times etc. If the cops say "it was a 6.5mm" and that relative knows "crazy cousin Eddie" has a Swedish Mauser, it pushes him beyond vague suspicion, to make the tip line call.

This is how the Unibomber case was cracked. The FBI was as far from solving it after a decade as they were after his first bombing victim.
