OK, if they were simply seeking asylum, why wouldn't they seek it from Nauru (OK, admittedly it's mostly a desolate wasteland) or from Indonesia?

Because they don't have legitimate claims for asylum. They just want away from the hell-holes they've created.

A very good question. Actually, with their limited resources, I can't imagine the Naurains being real excited about accepting these people either. The Aussies must be paying them big bucks to hold them.
