What I want to know is what causes left-handedness, and why in such a low percentage?

Nature seems to favor the clock-wise rotation over counter-clockwise.

This scientific data should qualify southpaws as a minority and, as such, qualify for subsidies. Any civil rights lawyers here?

what causes left-handedness

I did not know until age 10, but I am left-handed. But not exclusively. Small-motor control is better in the left. I believe it is genetically caused. Runs in the family.

Yup. I'm left handed. And left footed. I kick with my left foot much better than my right. The two hemispheres of the brain control the different sides of the body. The left hemisphere controls the right side, and the right hemisphere controls the left side. That's why they say left handed people are in their "right" minds. Some also say that the left hemisphere controls logic and mathematic skills, while the right hemisphere controls verbal skills and artistic expression.

New research shows that the frequency of left-handed painters — 23 percent — is the same today as it was back then.

I don't think this percentage holds up in the general population.
I think it is in the 10% range in general.

If it is as high as 23%, I'm going to start raising he@@ for more left-handed appliances, tools, SCISSORS, etc.

Nature seems to favor the clock-wise rotation over counter-clockwise.

Actually, I read a few years ago that, as far as they can determine "handedness" among animals, it seems to break down 50-50 between left and right. The discrepancy among humans is anomalous.

"What I want to know is what causes left-handedness, and why in such a low percentage?"

The reason it is such a low percentage is very simple: prefection rarely occurs

It's probably a cultural thing. For centuries left-handedness was considered "sinister". Lefties are still encouraged to be somewhat ambidextrous, tool makers also favor the right-handed design.
