I was watching the Tony Blair and President Bush press conference and an American reporter asked a question on the lines of do you believe Muslims and Christians worship the same God.

President Bush said that Christians and Muslims worship the same God!!!!

Please pray for President Bush's understanding of Islam and Christianity. This could do in his whole Presidency.

While it's obvious that Episcopalians and Muslims don't worship the same god, we have to remember that a Presidential campaign is not the place for a theological debate. There are hundreds of millions of Muslims in the world, and hundreds of millions of Christians, and it is likely that most of both camps don't have a detailed understanding of their theology. There are Christians who have studied theology and Muslims who have studied theology, and those will understand the differences. For the rest of the world, all that is obvious are the similarities. They worship an all-powerful something-or-other that tells you how you ought to live.

I don't think this issue will do in the President's campaign, and I don't think this reflects that the President himself doesn't understand the differences.

That doesn't mean that those who know better shouldn't detail those differences in places like Free Republic (until it becomes illegal, like in Australia).

I don't disagree with anything. There's nothing there to disagree with the fact that it's all the same God. Even Christians look at God differently. Catholics look at him through their saint's and Mary. Baptists try to ignore the fire and brimstone. Mormans add a native American flavor. Jews worship the same god without the assurity of forgiveness that Christ offered. Muslims see the crueler side of God from the old testement sharpened by Mohamed.

We all worship the same god, we just fight over His messagers (real or false).

You would think a real, all-powerful, all-knowing God would have enough of this foolishness to take five minutes out of His busy schedule and pop onto some mountain and speak for himself instead of going through unreliable middlemen with their own flaws and agendas.

Let me point out to you that many Muslim countries are our allies in the war on terror, including Turkey, who just suffered a second terrorist attack in less than a week this very morning.

It is unseemly to offend allies. It is also rather ironic that you bring a scatalogical reference into a discussion of theology.

If you don't agree with the president, that's fine. He told the reporter what HE thinks, not what anyone else should think.
