"along with fellow humor writers Molly Ivins..."

Molly Ivins has not been funny for a long time, if ever.

Whenever I see her referred to as a 'Pullitzer prize wining writer' I am reminded that Yassar Arafat and Jimmy Carter won the Nobel prize.

The prestige and reputation of both awards, the Nobel and the Pullitzer, was seriously damaged with the naming of these recipients.

Vicious partisanship in politics is nothing new. One of my favorite political cartoons of all time is one whose exact source I cannot recall, having seen it several years ago. It appeared in a prominent newspaper during the administration of Thomas Jefferson. Drawing from memory, it was as follows:

President Jefferson pulls on a rope tied to a statue representing the republic. The Devil has hold of Jefferson's waist, helping him pull. Next to Jefferson's feet is a half-empty bottle labeled "Brandy".

The Devil: "Heave away, Heave away my son! I'll help you!"

Jefferson: "With the help of my Old Friend and a little more Brandy, I'll bring it down!"

Yes, the rhetoric spewing forth from the self-styled Opposition Party (because they have no credible ideas of their own to promote) is vile, hateful and frequently obscene. However, it is neither a new or original development, and it most certainly is never going to go away.

On the other hand, some other things never seem to change, either. From the Biography of Thomas Jefferson on Whitehouse.Gov:

When Jefferson assumed the Presidency, the crisis in France had passed. He slashed Army and Navy expenditures, cut the budget, eliminated the tax on whiskey so unpopular in the West, yet reduced the national debt by a third. He also sent a naval squadron to fight the Barbary pirates, who were harassing American commerce in the Mediterranean.

Sound at all familiar?

Well, the tax cut and fighting the pirates is familiar. Cutting military spending, cutting the budget, and reducing the national debt not so much so.

Not when they look like the three troglodytes mentioned in this article.

Have you read Ann Coulter? Or Peggy Noonan? Never mind Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly. Let's face it, the Right Cross is just as brutal as the Left Hook. It's a rough-and-tumble world, and if conservatives are scared of the fight, they need to get out of the ring. If they're going to stay, they need to give as good as they get.

"Have you read Ann Coulter?"

I've read Ann Coulter, which is popularly held to be the most acidic one, right? I've never heard her use any terms that even come close to "human filth" or "chimp" or "devil". She doesn't even really sling around nutcase and nitwit unless it's -really- deserved. And no, I don't think she has ever suggested that all liberals need to be "held under the water long enough" to kill them.

The Left is way. way over the top. Ann's rough and brash (and after the years of conservatives just bending over and taking it, I love her for it), but the Left is hysterical, lying and absolutely brutal. If the Right is "brutal", it is because they call the Left to real account for their real actions. When the Left is "brutal", it is brutal in the way that a 7 year old kid who likes to torture squirrels is brutal. I suggest that you're engaged in moral equivalence.

I suggest that you're engaged in moral equivalence.

And I suggest that you're engaged in the most sophomoric defense ever mounted: "It's okay when I do it, because I'm the Good Guys."

Either that or pathological denial.

You can't get into a street fight and then be offended when the opposition lands one on your jaw!

"You can't get into a street fight and then be offended when the opposition lands one on your jaw!"

I would look at it more like being the guy who lets his screeching harpy of a wife kick the crap out of him all the time for years because he doesn't believe in divorce and it's wrong to hit a woman finally putting his foot down and saying "Enough" and giving back some of what he gets, but still holding back and hurting her far less than she does him.

If you really think liberals have been getting as much abuse as they throw out, I'm frankly amazed. Pick up "Slander" by Ann Coulter. Read what she cites and tell me the last time you saw a Republican say the endless litany of quotes of liberals concerning conservatives.

You should hear the list of what was said about Linda Tripp. Your jaw would drop. And she wasn't even a conservative for all I know, she just dared to cross a liberal.

Seriously - when was the last time you saw a Republican publish a book approving of a claim that any Democrat demographic group should be collectively drowned?

Please cite some examples for me of Republicans in the public square saying things about liberals that have matched "human filth" and "chimp".

"... pathetic little parakeet males ..."
"grim, quivering angry women ... hoping to be chosen as that day's purveyor of hate."
"[liberals'] arguments are premised on lies."
"lies of Holocaust-denial proportions."

From the first three pages of Ann Coulter's Slander.

Don't get me wrong. I think we need MORE of this kind of bare-fisted rhetoric. God knows, we've let the weenies on the Left cuff us around forever. But let's not pretend to any moral high ground to which we have no legitimate claim. More bludgeon, less dudgeon.
