Clinton Appointee Linked to Bombshell Anti-Bush Intel Memo
NewsMax.com ^ | 11/07/03 | Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

Posted on 11/07/2003 8:58:47 AM PST by kattracks

A former member of the Clinton administration is being linked to a bombshell Senate Intelligence Committee memo outlining a strategy to use information gathered by the committee to help drive President Bush from office in 2004.

In an editorial Friday, the Wall Street Journal reports:

"[Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-WV] refuses to denounce the memo, which he says was unauthorized and written by staffers. If that's the case, at the very least, some heads ought to roll. A good place to start would be minority staffer Christopher Mellon, who serves as deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence in the Clinton administration."

One of Mellon's former bosses, former first lady Hillary Clinton, has been sharply critical of the Bush administration's policy in Iraq. Last week she accused the White House of trying cover-up battlefield casualties and said Bush's decision to invade Iraq was "the antithesis of the rule of law."

The Journal recommended that, until those responsible for Democrats' decision to politicize intelligence are fired, the Intelligence Committee should be "shut down, cleaned out and reconstituted later, preferably after the next election."

On Wednesday Democratic Sen. Zell Miller said attempts by committee Democrats to undermine an American president at a time of war were "perhaps treasonous.

"If what has happened here is not treason, it is its first cousin," Miller charged, in a statement released by his office."

Still, elected Republicans both on and off the Senate Intelligence Committee have expressed nothing like Miller's outrage.

Instead of confronting Democrats over what may be the most serious breach of national security since the Clinton administration allowed a Democratic Party donor to provide missile guidance technology to China, Republicans have urged further bipartisan cooperation with Rockefeller and his staff.

Asked on Thursday what needed to be done to address the security breach, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kans., said only, "The answer is simple. We go back to work. We have documents yet to review."

Good post, but I can tell you that I'm still angry and I'm still on this!

I emailed Senator Roberts this morning telling him this is NOT going away. We can all let our senators know that this is endangering our troops and compromising our President's ability to prosecute the war--it's filthy with Billary and WE KNOW IT.

And once again the gutless GOP takes it up the wazzoo and just smiles. A display of backbone would be really nice, for a change.

I am simply astounded at the "who cares" attitude exhibited by repubs. This is dangerous to our country. This could be what allows something very bad to happen.

I don't want my Senate run like this, not at all.

Yes, the dems will pay a price at the polls for this... but don't think repubs won't pay too if they fail to protect our intel.

If you DO have a dog in this hunt, then call your senators' offices, call the White House, email, fax, do whatever you can...DON't let this issue die.

Rockefeller doesn't care, apparently, that "leaking" intelligence from the committee is anything serious. I do. I think that Rockefeller MUST resign.

This is our opportunity to demand action and demand it today...GO for it!

"And once again the gutless GOP takes it up the wazzoo and just smiles."

I don't see this as gutless as just plain stupid. If Sen. Rockefeller doesn't want to renounce the memo what should that say to the Republicans on the committee? If the Republicans are going to roll over and play dead until the DEMONcrats leak SELECTIVE sensitive information then I say it's time for new leadership within the Republican party. At a minimum they should demand an investigation.

Yes, Senator, and if you do just "go back to work", they will probably be the last documents that your committee ever sees.

Thanks to some RAT staffer or Senator, President Bush now has a trump card whenever he wants to refuse to give the committee ANY documents.

If the repubs do nothing, they're part of the problem, not part of the solution. jmho.

I made one last call before getting ready to go to work-Senator Kit Bonds office. One of his staffers made the comment that there is a huge security leak on the committee and that has to be addressed. When I responded with, "You mean like after Chinagate?" He said I know you are upset and discouraged with the silence, but this is not going away.(Ive talked to this guy three straight days) Unfortunatley we are going into a weekend, the only hope for continued exposure is the Sunday Morning talk shows. When I get home from work tonight, Im going to gather emails for the Sunday Talk shows and post them..

I'm not optimistic based on what I've seen in the past ... however, if the Republicans would grow a set of balls and challenge the "Rats" on important issues such as this it would be very helpful. Instead they leave it up to Zel Miller to express the appropriate outrage.

This is not as true as it was even 5 years ago. I think that with talk radio, the internet, FNC and the activism of the individuals who make use of these media, we have a better chance of seeing it on CBSNBCABCCNNMSNBC - albeit with spin.

There was a chart up on some threads yesterday showing which media outlets had covered it, where (p. A27), and how spun.

I think the media, while still overwhelmingly controlled by leftists, is moving away from total control. I think that's part of the reason we have both houses of Congress. I also think that's why we're witnessing the end of the dem party as we know it.

Hey, I can hope!

"this memo will NEVER see the time of day!"

No, CNN has already tried to spin it, as has MSNBC. The Wall Street Journal is covering it, as is the Washington Times. Talk radio is all over it and the Internet is buzzing about it. Given time, US News and World Report will run it, as will USA Today.

In the meantime, ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, TIME, Newsweek, and the NY Times simply have less chance to shape the direction that this scandal heads because they are so far trying to ignore it as if it will go away.

Let those media outlets be the last to the dance. The music is still playing, after all...
