An Open Letter to President and Mrs. Bush on the occasion of their 26th Wedding Anniversary

Dear President and Mrs. Bush,

Over the past 3 years the American public has had the opportunity to observe in the two of you what has unfortunately become a rare thing……..a healthy, loving, committed-for-life marriage. We have, of course, been privileged during your time in the White House, to witness many other fine qualities in you both as well. We have seen your character, courage and strength, faith and loyalty, honor and dignity, calm in the midst of storm, and discipline in the midst of confusion. But as we share with you our thoughts on this occasion of your anniversary, it is the love we have seen in both of you, especially for each other, that stands out as most remarkable.

The deep and growing love you have for each other, and the confidence and security that gives you, enables you both to reach out and love others more effectively. We have seen day after day how you care for others and show God's love toward everyone you encounter. We have seen you with the wounded and suffering, with those in need, with children, colleagues, friends and family, and we have observed that the love you share with each of them is a love that comes from deep within, and which cannot be faked .

Those of us who are hopeless romantics are thrilled whenever we see you together! We love how you reach for each other instinctively, how you touch, and kiss because it is a natural extension of your being together: two, yet one. Many public couples have mastered the obligatory handholding that goes with public life, but yours……..yours is a handholding of lovers; of two people who need each other near, and who communicate through that touch.

We could not help but observe, Mr. President, on your trip to Asia , that you kept your dear Laura very close to you. We prayed fervently for your safety because it was a dangerous journey, and we knew that you needed to be together. We, as your supporters, were glad that she was there to share this marvelous and monumentally important experience with you. And we were so very proud of you both for representing this great country…..the United States of America …..with such dignity and honor!

Some of us were privileged to get to know you before you ran for President in 2000, because of living in Texas . Those people got a chance to watch you, both as individuals and as a couple, and see what wonderful people you were. And most of us knew you as the oldest son of the wonderful George H.W. and Barbara Bush, but didn't really see who you were until you entered the national scene. But as we got to know you, we began to see the special quality you had together. Not many husbands break down in tears when they dedicate a promenade to their beloved wife, nor describe their decision to marry her as ‘the best decision I ever made.' And Laura, there was something about that glimmer in your eye at the Republican Convention, when you said that while your husband's opponent was spending one night a week with a teacher, but that your husband ‘spent EVERY night with a teacher!” that let us in on your very special marriage. But we didn't really know until we saw you interact with each other day after day, how truly remarkable your marriage was!

Karen Hughes said that your relationship was ‘playful.' We have seen certainly that. We have seen it in your playful banter in your interview with Peggy Noonan in the Ladies Home Journal…….that you are a real, normal couple (one of whom doesn't pick up his towels!), and that your “marriage has never been better.” We have seen it, Laura, in your sharing of that gloriously sappy, “lump in the bed,” “aircraft carrier” love poem your husband wrote while you were in Europe…….and in your husband's jokes about that priceless photo of you, being kissed by that rather large ‘frog!' And we know that when he tells audiences that they "drew the short straw" when they got him instead of you, that he really believes it!

You have said that you are each other's refuge and comfort. We have seen that at work. We have seen you work together in extremely difficult circumstances, and draw strength from each other. We know that the situation in which God has placed you has it's positive points……..and remember how Ronald Reagan said he liked to push his chair back in the Oval Office, and look upstairs to the White House residence, drawing comfort from the fact that his beloved Nancy was there. We know that is true for you as well, President Bush. But we also know the time for which God has chosen you to lead us, is among the most challenging in American history, and that your lives are in danger because of that call of God.

We pray for you, President and Mrs. Bush. We pray daily……for God's blessing and protection in your lives, for wisdom and discernment, for your daughters, and greater family……but also for your marriage, that it remain vibrant and strong, loving and fun, and that you continue to be completed by and find joy in each other. Laura, many of us see you as a fine example of the Proverbs 31 wife; your radiant beauty revealing "a noble character, worth far more than rubies." And President Bush, we see that you love your wife as you are instructed to do in Ephesians, "as Christ loves the church," in a sacrificial and selfless manner.

Next year, for your anniversary, we have decided to give you a special gift…………four more years in the White House! We know that it will mean sacrifice for you as individuals and as a couple, but America needs you both as long as we can legally keep you! Then, in 2009, all of us who love you (and there are millions of us), want you to retire happily to your beautiful, peaceful Prairie Chapel Ranch, where you can take long, hand-holding walks around the ranch, sit on the porch and talk endlessly with your best friend, take romantic rides in the cab of your pick-up truck, and enjoy the scenic view from your ‘favorite room.' We want you to enjoy going to bed early, and waking early, sharing coffee and newspapers in bed in the morning for all the many years that God gives you together.

Thank you for being an inspiration to us………to the young and to the old, to those of us who are single, and those of us who are happily married, or not quite so. Thank you for being a sorely needed example to our children and our youth of what an exciting, loving, fun, passionate, committed, and joyous God-centered marriage can be!

HAPPY 26th ANNIVERSARY, PRESIDENT and MRS. BUSH!! May God allow your glorious love affair to continue for many, many more years!

Why am I not surprised that that 'couple in name only' was not together on their 25th anniversary?

Evening, oWf. What a great letter. It says so much of what many of us feel. Looking over the few pics you chose, I still find the second to last one as one of my all time favorites (course, I have hundreds). The one where he is behind her whispering in her ear says how at ease they are. I love that picture!

Thanks for the ping.
