His personal life became the focus of controversy after it was revealed that Spencer fathered two children with his chief-of-staff, Kathy Spring.....

After all, I'm sure Rove isn't doing jumping jacks over a pro-life RINO who has fathered children out-of-wedlock.

How is he a RINO?

Spencer fathered two children with his chief-of-staff, Kathy Spring - whom he recently married - while still married to his first wife.

There's not a big constituency anywhere for a candidate who is both pro-life and pro-adultery. I guess his wife would be an asset to solidifying such a constituency, though, given that she's a homewrecking climber.

Yeah, this is the face the GOP needs to put forth.

That's how Bill Clinton started out.

Johnny, we both want to pick up as many Senate seats as possible, but this guy doesn't cut it. Not with that personal life.

Isn't there some Republican congressman or businessman willing to run? Come on. What's wrong with Ricky Lazio? I can't really blame him. Bush only won 33% of the vote. It was expecting too much of him to win in 2000. It's a shame he didn't run for Comptroller last year.

Money would pour in from all over to get rid of Schumer.

I know. There must be someone else in the state. It's obvious the GOP doesn't really care about the seat that much.

Exactly my dear friend. Exactly why I'm sure this wasn't Karl Rove's idea. He isn't putting this idiot on a stage with Bush.

I've yet to see evidence in the NY Senate race of involvement by Karl Rove. In fact, I think there is too little. After all, I'm sure Rove isn't doing jumping jacks over a pro-life RINO who has fathered children out-of-wedlock. This isn't exactly the type of person he intends to put on a stage with the President of the United States.

Look again...

Among inducements to getting Spencer, 56, to enter the race: the promise of a high-profile appearance with President Bush (news - web sites) at next summer's Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden.

Do you think anyone's getting onstage with Bush at next year's convention without Karl Rove's green light?

Do you think anyone's making that promise without Rove's green light, if he's such a genius? Wouldn't he already know, and have put a stop to it?

That this trial balloon even made it to press is evidence-a-plenty of Karl Rove's fingerprints.

I have a question....If Hitlery decides to run in '04...does she have to give up her senate seat???

Nope.

This article stinks - the NY GOP is a posse of losers. Tossing a sacrificial lamb to Schumer, handing him 6 more years as Senator. Pataki should run (he wouldn't have to give up his governorship) and he has a shot at winning at least. This guy is going to get slaughtered 75-25 in NYC (while Pataki would close that up a bit, I think) and Schumer marches back to DC.

Pitiful

The convention is in NYC next year, in case you didn't know. Whoever the US Senate nominee from NY is will get high billing, unless it's a monkey in diapers. This isn't a special promise to anyone. It's there for whoever the nominee is.

You've got to be kidding me. That is an inducement? Who the hell will even know who he is?

The stars on the stage will be the President, the Vice President, the Governor, the two Mayor, Arnold, Frist, et. al.

It seems to me more likely that Pataki is making such an offer. It rings true, and besides, as Governor and host, he would make such determinations.

What is your continuing obsession with Karl Rove? Is it safer for you to blast him rather than the President?

This is an insult to Pres. Bush as you make him out to be some marionette dangling from Rove's Machiavellian strings (which I think is your purpose in actuality).

No he wouldn't. I want him running in 2006 for the battle of the four NY giants:

Pataki vs. Hillary-Giuliani vs. Spitzer

Every other race in America would sink to puny insignficance.

It's hard to get strong candidates to tackle any tough race, and Schumer is very well liked in New York and he has tons of money. Rudy might have beaten him, MAYBE maybe Pataki, and anyone else would be a total longshot.

I agree, but at least make it a race. This would be the 2nd sacrificial lamb in 2 senate races in a row in NY.

Pataki is my hand picked guy for this job - he is popular also, has no future in Albany beyond this term (12 years is a looong time), and has nothing to lose by challenging Schumer in 04.

I also think that Rudy is joining the presidential ticket, but I'm in the minority there. Bush and the GOP need someone they can point to as their successor in 2008, or else it makes it too easy for Rodham. Cheney won't run for President. Rudy is the logical choice. His presence on the ticket in NYS in 2004 could help carry a serious senate candidate.

I wish Vito Fossella from Staten Island would become more visible. I think he could stand a chance against Chuckie.
