HAVANA (AFP) - Noted US linguist and left-wing social critic Noam Chomsky said he was surprised at the failed US policy in Iraq, especially after such a relatively easy invasion.
The 74-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor said it took "real talent" to botch things up as badly as the United States has in Iraq, especially in view of prostrate state the country was after years of UN sanctions.
Speaking through an interpreter at the formal presentation of his book "Noam Chomsky en La Jornada," a compilation of articles published by the renowned US scholar in the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, Chomsky said it was hard to understand why there was so much unrest in Iraq.
Nevertheless, he said he expected things to calm down during the upcoming campaign for the US presidential elections next year.
Chomsky, who on Tuesday addressed the 25th assembly of the Latin American Council on Social Sciences, at which Cuban President Fidel Castro was also present, also mused on Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar -- one of several world leaders who supported the US-British-led invasion of Iraq.
Aznar, Chomsky said through an interpreter, decided to shine the boots of US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
He said everyone knew that Aznar followed orders from Texas (Bush's home state) even against the wishes of his own people, who were largely opposed to the Iraq War.

We have a failed policy in Iraq? Well golly guess we had a failed policy in germany and japan (both of which had gurella actions for years after the formal surrender).
Oh how dismal that the US can't get anything right.
Failed in germany, failed in japan, failed in iraq we might as well march into mecca and raise the white flag right now.

Inside the field of linguistics, Chomsky is indeed a genius. Outside of it, he is invariably and unforgivably stupid. Having explained that language as being pure intuition, he apprently believes this idea can be applied to all forms of knowledge. And thus, he goes forth and constructs his foolish political fairy tales, totally unverified and unverifiable, but endowed with a persuasive power which seduces the feeble-minded and easy to appease.

Noam is also surprised that light bulbs radiate light rather than suck dark.

Chomsky also spoke at Fermilab earlier this month. Forget Wen Ho Lee; that was a real security leak.

I'm surprised that a clever fellow like Chomsky, a certified academic type, hasn't managed to write a real book on the subject of politics. Instead, it's always these scrapbook "collections" of his articles. It's just a little odd.

Chimpsky really has descended to the level of self-parody. It's probably all you can expect form the man.

There you go! That was exactly the term to sum up Gnome Chimsky! Looter! How fitting that he made his vituperations while being feted by Looter Luminary, Footpad Fidel.

Heck, who needs bombs...their surrogates here in the states (dems) are doing a fine job.

Yours is a very interesting observation.

Well golly guess we had a failed policy in germany and japan (both of which had gurella actions for years after the formal surrender). can you direct me to any reference materials on that subject?
(as i've watched the slow bleeding in iraq these past months, i've often wished i had more information on past US occupations to help lend some perspective)

Spoken like a true looter... a useless blowhard standing atop the tremendous achievement of others while denegrating same. however you may dislike his politics, good brother chomsky has no need to leverage the achievements of others. his work in linguistics and computer science is paramount.
save your rand rant for a more deserving target.

Chomsky is a dunderhead. Because we have so many teachers in California that are also dunderheads, they use his book of lies and misrepresentations to teach US history to high school and college kids in this state. His book is an abomination of freedom.
To: Fledermaus
Noam, isn't that the fat guy from Cheers?
I read a much longer version of this article in the AJC
he went on to laud Cuba and Cuban advances etc.
Pathetic little man.

You should stifle any defense of this history butchering communist. His book, a peoples history of the united states is full of communistic misrepresentations and lies and is taken as gospel in the California public school system. He deserves all criticism and his book should be thrown out of the public school system for being communist propaganda.
To: .cnI redruM
The only thing that surprised me about Chomsky anymore is that he gets any press coverage. One would think that the press would be more interested in covering someone who could provide insight.

Wha? Its a cheap way to make money with little effort. The guy is a raving capitalist that uses communism to hypnotize the weak minded. His writings are to make money, not make sense.

You're correct. These guys all blend together. My mistake.
To: jethropalerobber
You should fear the communists because they have changed the political landscape of this country to the point where the freedoms we once held are gone.
Examples:
Politically correct speech. ON college campuses the communists have won. Most campuses in California have 'speech codes' where there are many things you cannot say or you will get expelled. One student at San Luis Obispo put a poster up advertising a talk by a black man about 'how to get off the plantation'. He was expelled because his flier 'offended' some students. This is pure communist thought control.
In the sickest way, campuses have created 'free speech zones', where you are supposed to be allowed to speak your thoughts without getting expelled. At UC santa cruz that tiny area on campus is in the parking lot in front of the bookstore. Do you truly think you can have true education happen in a place where the only area you can speak your mind is in a parking lot? How does that encourage free thought in the classroom and discussion with professors on the course?
If you fear censors then you fear the communists. I've only given two examples but they are myriad of communist thought applied to university campuses and they are excellent examples of the censorship you fear.
To: jethropalerobber
And yet he consistently denegrates the system that allowed him his achievements... which would have been impossible in the world he invisions and strives to manufacture. He is a true Looter in every sense; looting the freedom that he enjoys while destroying it for others. He'll do just fine as the subject of this and future rants, Thank you.
