A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....10-20-03....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Good morning all. Time for another tribute to some of my fallen comrades.

In memory of my fellow Vietnam helicopter pilots who were killed in that war the following were lost OCT 20. God bless them all.

1965 WO1 Don G. Knowlton -- 119 AHC, Age 24, Married, Minneapolis, Minnesota
1965 WO1 Ronald W. Macklin -- 119 AHC, Age 27, Married, Glendale, California
1968 CW4 Charles E. Deitsch -- 243 AHC, Age 56, Married, Mt Dora, Florida
1968 CW2 Henry C. Knight -- 243 AHC, Age 31, Married, La Habra, California
1970 CW2 Terence A. Handley -- 68 MED DET, Age 20, Single, Portland, Oregon
1970 1LT Kenneth M. Schlie -- 54 MED DET, Age 26, Married, Vienna, Virginia
1970 WO1 Byron M. Hannah -- B/3/17 CAV, Age 26, Single, Cygnet, Ohio

On October 20, 1968, CW3 Charles Deitsch, aircraft commander; WO1 Henry Clay Knight, pilot; SP5 Charles Meldahl, crewchief; SP4 Jerry Bridges, flight engineer; and SP4 Ronald Stanton, door gunner, departed Dong Ba Thien Airfield, South Vietnam, in a CH-47A Chinook helicopter (serial #66-19053). "Freight Train 053" was leading a flight on a resupply mission to Ban Me Thout in the Central Highlands. As the flight proceeded into the Ninh Hoa Valley, deteriorating weather conditions forced the other helicopters to turn back to Dong Ba Thien. At 0700 hours CW3 Deitsch radioed that 053 was over the valley and would proceed on to Ban Me Thout. That was the last anyone heard of the CH-47. At about 0800 hours, it was determined that the helicopter was overdue. An intensive search effort was made, but no wreckage or the aircraft was ever found, and search efforts were concluded on October 28. Villagers were later canvassed throughout the Ninh Hoa Valley, and literature was distributed asking about the crash of the Chinook, but no new information was ever discovered - until 1994. The entire crew of Freight Train 053 was ultimately discovered, positively identified, and buried on May 25, 2001, at Arlington National Cemetery. Welcome Home Freight Train 053! You will live forever in our hearts.

Chinook helicopters flew over Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, during funeral services for the five members of the helicopter crew that was Freight Train 053 who died in Vietnam 35 years ago today.

SCOUTS OUT!

To all those who offered prayers to our granddaughter, Ashley Elise. She is finally home. She was able to leave the hospital last Wednesday. I posted to this thread that day but didn't have any pictures but now that Mrs ladtx has returned with the digital camera full here are a couple of them. As you can see Leila Kay is very glad to have her little sister home and will be a big help to her Mom and Dad. Once again thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers.

An update on our wolfie - had hoped after a week, we would see him back here where he belongs. He's still not doing well and can't stand or sit long to 'talk' to us. Here is what he wrote this morning...

"Not much improvement here. I still can't stand without pain, no sleep, etc. The infction is still causing probs. I was gong to have to go to the hospital for IVs but Doc said what I'm taking by mouth is just as good. I also have pulled muscles and tendons. I've had needles, medicine for a week now, I'm sick of it! I have no appetite at all. I've had two sandwiches.

I have a full time therapist with me now. I made my aunt go home Sat. She's just not strong enough to help me, and I was afraid she was getting down.

Have to go, just can't stay here any longer. Don't know when I'll be back in."

)))))))((((((wolfie))))))((((((

The story of "Freight Train 053" brought tears to my eyes. For their families, 26 years is a very long time to wait for closure. God Bless them All and thank you for your tribute. I love that picture and would like to make a pledge graphic with it if it's okay with you?

That picture is linked to www.arlingtoncemetery.net, I don't have any control over it, but it is a nice picture and would make a good pledge graphic.

Mornin' FR's Finest...

Military Monday always seems an appropriate way to start the week. :)

Salute to your fallen brothers, ladtx. Great pics of those two beautiful grand-daughters.

Louie, hope your road to recovery is free of pot-holes.

Thanks for those photos, jw.

Time for me to grab a cup of that coffee and prepare to take on the day. Logan and I still have the lingering effects of the crud but together, we'll manage just fine.
