Racist cartoonist, Aaron McGruder, 'The Boondocks', trashes Condi Rice (vanity)
Various

Posted on 10/18/2003 12:39:01 PM PDT by EveningStar

Aaron McGruder is a creep. He's a black cartoonist whose strip, The Boondocks, is fairly popular.

On his radio show, Larry Elder has played excerpts from a speech McGruder made in front of a group of college students. In this speech, he ripped Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice for being mass murderers.

Below are links to some panels from an ongoing arc where he takes potshots at Condi Rice (I refuse to post the actual images here):

If it were a white cartoonist, the reference to a 40-ouncer would have been attacked as racist. I've never seen his cartoon strip. From what I saw, he isn't funny and the strip pretty much sucks.

No offense or anything, but McGruder draws for urban black Democrats and I don't think it much matters much what "message" he sends them. All he's doing is preaching to the choir.

I heard Larry's show.

This cartoonist is one scary fellow, elitist, snotty, hateful and racist. He's the type who calls Justice Thomas, Condi and Powell Uncle Toms. He calmly insisted that Colin Powell is a mass murderer, several times in a row.

Doug, I know you're a frequently listener of, and caller to, Larry's show. In fact, I've heard you. :)

Larry was reading these cartoons on the air (yesterday, I think). Larry feels that the message McGruder communicates is hate. He calls McGruder a hater. I find it hard to disagree with Larry's assessment.

"...all we need to know is if she prefers white men or black men..."

I suppose it's not possible to believe that she might prefer HONEST men... or intelligent men... or introspective men. Nah. Race is of course the first and foremost criteria on what to appreciate in a mate.

This stuff is so innately and grossly racist it's unbelievable.

It's really intelligent to suggest that Condi Rice is a war-mongering thug because she needs to find a boyfriend. And yes, it's racist if a white guy makes a reference to blacks and a 40-ounce bottle of Colt .45 malt liquor.

From what I saw, he isn't funny and the strip pretty much sucks.

Yeah, he came up with a drawing of a perpetually frowning, bitter, cynical, and caustic teenage black kid and that image is used simply to convey an attitude. The cartoonist gets away with a five-panel strip and I have never seen one that is funny. I get the impression the cartoonist is lazy. Occasionally the strips come off as "too clever by half", but they are never insightful or thought-provoking. Heck, if the guy was any good he would at least make me mad. But he's a lightweight and he can't even do that.

Like most people, I suppose, I have my six or seven strips I check out and the rest don't even exist.

Fact is, there are several excellent black cartoonists out there, but McGruder is not one of them. But he is a black cartoonist and that makes him a perfect "affirmative action" hire for many liberal newspapers.

My advice: brush him off like a fly - - he's nobody.

I find your strip this week's strip of mocking Condi Rice very sad. Just because you disagree with her, doesn't mean you have to demean her. You have fallen in to the trap, that many of us black folks do, of taking shots at a prominent black person because they don't think like you. Like when Harry Belafonte called C. Rice and Colin Powell house negros because they don't think like him. Rather than celebrate a black woman achieved a position that no other woman at all ever had, you chose to take pot shots. And one more thing Aaron, you're only 26 with a BS. Condi Rice is 49 with a PhD. Who do you think knows more?

My main complaint about the strip is that the Dallas News has chosen to run it separately at the bottom of the advice column page where Cathy used to run.

It is most unsuitable on that page. I find it occasionally funny when it sticks to black inside jokes, most of which I don't understand, but it can be incredibly tasteless and vicious when he veers into politics as he often does.

A number of people, including me, have complained, but they don't listen. They moved Doonesbury to the editorial page a long time ago and that's where this dreck belongs if they have to keep him.

The one I hate more than him is the Bizarro guy. That guy is a big step below in nastiness combined with self-satisfaction, a mix that works nicely for libs in the arts.

This may seem crass, but why do Black People want to be slaves and why do they want to be referred to as Black people?

Pour Examplier; I am Little Bill, I live in NH and Mass, I am a Swamp Yankee, and I prefer to be known as Bill. If I were Black, and all of the above applied, which it can, I would still like to be Bill, rather than Black Bill, this stuff leaves me confused.

Don't be so hard on Mc Gruder! He is not afraid to take on some sacred cows in the black community and, while he is undoubtedly leftist in his political leanings,he seems to give equal time to miscreants of his own color as well as"whitey"and does it with a scathing sense of humor.

Its SATIRE,Doug! For example, before the Condi Rice series he did a hilarious send-up of middle class black kids who try to pose as"gangstas"when Huey wanted to re-name the streets in his"hood"like Tame Deer Lane after hip hop figures!Mac Gruder hit that whole tendency of many middle class black youth to compensate their relative prosperity by coming on as "hard core"and looking foolish as hell in the process.
I have a feeling that Condi is laughing uproariously at the cartoon. She is secure enough within herself that she can laugh at herself AND her people which is neither racist or degrading.

A few years ago a character in this strip suggested that Ward Connerly should be beaten with a spiked club.

My email to the Sacramento Bee was answered by the ombudsman suggesting that I was too stupid to understand "satire."

When the left threatens violence and death, it's "satire." Got it? For example, that "snipers wanted" sign on a picture of presidential candidate George Bush, or how about the satire of Baldwin screaming that Henry Hyde and his family should be killed? We've posted the numerous examples of leftwing "satire" here is the past.

Oh, we are the hate mongers, not them. They got satire. Lots and lots of satire.

Oh,I am sure I would have many disagreements with the gentleman.I am not arguing that point.
I am sure I would not share many of Robert Redford's political viewpoints but that doesn't make the fact that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one brilliant movie!I tend to separate the artist's personal axes he wants to grind from his art.
In Mac Gruder's case,I contend he bashes both white conservatives AND black militant poseurs like Jackson and Sharpton.
I don't have a problem with balance.

What a chode. I hate people who are meaningless trying to make themselves into something important.

As a former cartoonist myself, I can tell you that you have correctly identified why Aaron McGruder is a lousy cartoonist. It is not because he is a liberal. It is because:

a) His cartoons are not funny.

b) His cartoons are poorly drawn--static figures, easy to do.

(Side note: I really miss the two best--i.e., best combination of being funny and well drawn--cartoon strips of the past 25 years, namely, The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes. I wish somebody would talk those two guys out of retirement. At the same time, I know how hard it is to keep a cartoon strip up to the standards one has set. The well can run dry.)

Fact is, there are several excellent black cartoonists out there, but McGruder is not one of them.

"Curtis" "Jump Start" and "Herb and Jamal" are some of the best written and drawn strips out there. But because they aren't radical cultural critics of the Spike Lee school, they don't get the attention Boring McBooger gets.

Incidentaly, 'toon historians have confirmed that George "Krazy Kat" Herrmann, possibly the greatest cartoonist of all time, had African-American ancestry.

Seems to me that being the replacement for/compared to "Cathy" is punishment enough and well deserved since both play to a very specific, very troubled, audience.

At least "Boondocks" characters look like people, although I'm never sure which on is the girl.
