President George W. Bush’s grandfather was a director of a bank seized by the federal government because of its ties to a German industrialist who helped bankroll Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, government documents show.

Prescott Bush was one of seven directors of Union Banking Corp., a New York investment bank owned by a bank controlled by the Thyssen family, according to recently declassified National Archives documents reviewed by The Associated Press.

Fritz Thyssen was an early financial supporter of Hitler, whose Nazi party Thyssen believed was preferable to communism. The documents do not show any evidence Bush directly aided that effort. His position with Union Banking never was a political issue for Bush, who was elected to the Senate from Connecticut in 1952.

Let's see if I've got this right:

GRANDFATHER (3rd generation relative)

one of 7 directors (associate with some co-workers)

worked for a bank (employer)

owned by a bank (employer's higher HQ)

controlled by a family (employer's higher under supervision of)

Therefore GW is guilty because GW's 3rd generation relative was one of a group of associate co-workers, employed by an organization that was under the direction of a different organization that was supervised by a man.

So that's the new standard for a smear.

If you are related to someone who worked with some others who were employed by an institution connected to another institution that was supervised by a someone.

Using that standard we could probably convict the Pope.

How George W Bush's father's father's father knew someone whose barber's great uncle (4 times removed) heard a rumor about someone who might have thought about owning a slave. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton could kill a convent full of nuns and orphans on live TV and it would merely be a personal failing.

This is partisan, but I think people are underplaying it a bit too much because of it's partisan motives.

The Bush and Kennedy clan as well as other important families in this country were trading with the enemy, supporting the enemy, coddling the enemy.

This has nothing to do with George W. Bush, or what he believes, or who he is, but on it's own, it should give us pause. It took 50 years for these documents to come out. How much longer til we get more documents about Joe Kennedy? How much longer til we get documents about prominent american families and businesses dealing with Saddam?

Thyssen was the chief guy responsible IMHO of putting Hitler in power. He was the big money guy for Hitler after Hitler was released from jail, and before he climbeed to power. Without Thyssen's money, the Nazis very likely would not have survived the Beer Hall Putsch. Prescott Bush was indirectly involved with Thyssen. Again, this has nothing to do with the current President, but in an effort to make sure this doesn't stick to the President, let us not downplay the fact that powerful americans were doing a dangerous tango with the Nazis. Kennedy and Harriman on the democratic side, the Walkers and Prescott Bush were examples on the republican side. It sucked. They were wrong. Hindsight is 20/20, but... they were on the wrong side of history.
