You have named a bunch of steriotypical observations on some homeschooled kids that are preached straight from the NEA. Are you?

Now you've insulted me. I cannot abide education unions! Not the national nor the local one. They are bent on having all teachers treated "fairly" with no accountability, pushing kids into year round schools, making pre-school mandatory, etc.! My observations about home schooled children are genuine. I came through public schools, pushed myself to take the college prep courses and graduated with honors. I know kids in public schools right now in my area that are great kids, taking honors classes, involved in the community, etc. I guess I'm just biased!

" One child is several years behind compared to the others in the class. Her mother seems almost illiterate, but the state (or something) allows her to continue homeschooling her child."

Perhaps the child is mildly retarded.

Actually in my inexpert opinion the mother is mildly retarded. I don't understand why she is allowed to teach the child. I realize this is not a normal case for home schooling, but this mother should not be permited to home school her child.

If you really believe this, perhaps you should turn her in to Child Protective Services? If such a drastic measure seems inappropriate, then I suggest you "allow" the woman to keep her child, help them with what you can (in a good Christian way), and pray to God to help them.

Personally, I would have to see first hand evidence of some really serious abuse or neglect before I would EVER bring down the heavy hand of government on anyone. The government will just stick the poor little girl in an state institution full of other horribly abused children (what a wonderful experience that will be for her), lock the mother in jail (that will teach her not to be so stupid, err retarded). And everyone will live happily ever after. Not.

You leave the impression you just can't understand how anyone can continue to let this woman do what she is doing. Well, believe it or not, you have the power to stop it. You have the power to protect or destroy this family, use it wisely and carefully.
