How Democrats Lost a House Seat in California
The American Prospect ^ | 5-18-2020 | Alexander Sammon

Posted on 05/18/2020 5:58:16 AM PDT by Sir Napsalot

No matter how you slice it, what happened in last week’s special election for California’s 25th Congressional District was not good for Democrats. In resounding fashion, Democratic hopeful Christy Smith, a state assemblywoman from Santa Clarita, was beaten by Republican defense industry executive Mike Garcia. While ballots are still being counted in what was an almost all-mail-in election, recent tallies had Garcia, a Trump endorsee, trouncing Smith by a double-digit margin .... Smith conceded quickly.

There are the coronavirus caveats. Stay-at-home orders meant low turnout, which favored Garcia: older, whiter, and more-affluent voters tend to vote by mail already and predominate in low-turnout elections. And CA-25 had been in Republican hands for decades before it was flipped by Democratic newcomer Hill in 2018, who resigned late last year after revelations of an affair with a campaign staffer.

But the solace ends there. In the first special election of the pandemic era, where Trump’s brazen mishandling has led to the deaths of tens of thousands while being openly combative with California officials over the state’s response, Democrats were thumped by one of Trump’s gold-star flunkies. It marks the first time the GOP has flipped a Democratic-held California congressional district since 1998, over two decades ago. CA-25 may be purplish, but seat-flipping is not a phenomenon that tends to happen in both directions in California, especially with the latter-day Republican Party, especially under Trump. And the 25th District is not a rural backwoods that has been part of the Trump core, either; it’s the suburban corridor just north of Los Angeles, next door to a deep-blue urban hub and very much the suburban composition that Democrats have identified as their new wheelhouse. It backed Hillary Clinton by seven points, and Trump has long had a deeply underwater favorability rating there.

Subtitle: Getting to the bottom of the shocking loss in the 25th Congressional District

Leftists finding made-up fairy tales (re: claiming "The favorable skew of a vote-by-mail-heavy, low-turnout election" favored Republicans. If it is not heavy vote-by-mail, then the excuse will be young people low turn out, whatever.) or other excuses (re: Covid-19 sapped the energy of the grassroots is just one of them.) yada yada yada.... Apparently, Alexander Sammon thinks in CA political seats can only run one way, turning all to Democrats held positions.

No bias here, Sammon calls The New Democrat Coalition (represented by AOC and The Squad) a centrist group in Congress. And complained Christy Smith ran as a 'safe centrist', iow, not progressive enough, therefore those in California’s 25th Congressional District, not the Trump backwater district, rejected her (by voting for a "Trump gold-star flunkie", Sammon's words not mine). SMH, how twisted can you be?!!?!!!

The RINOs would rather lose a seat than win with a qualified conservative. There is as big a battle for the soul of the Republican party asis going on with the democrats. It’s just that with Trump at the head, we are sort of winning despite spineless feckless RINO Senators.

“...Trump’s brazen mishandling has led to the deaths of tens of thousands...”

“Gold-star flunkie”

“backwater rural areas”

How does this guy get away with this slanderous $hit? What does it say about his employer, who allows it to be printed? The civil war couldn’t come sooner enough.

Biden is a disaster for the top of the ticket for Democrats.

A major part of their constituency is unmarried young and middle aged women.

Biden has the “ew gross dirty old man” factor—and it will burn all the Democrats down ticket when these women “no show” on election day.

We just need good candidates.

That's it in a nutshell. No "never-Trumpers", no milquetoasts, no talk of "crossing of the aisle" to work with the other side.

A pure conservative who supports our president and sticks to their principles will win almost every time.

What shocking loss? The GOP never should have lost the 25th District seat in the first place - the GOP had held it for 20 years. Now they should be able to hold it for the next 20 years plus.

My conspiracy theory: I think the Democrats are holding back on the blatant fraud until November when it will be too late to do anything.

I thought this was funny:
“...where Trump’s brazen mishandling has led to the deaths of tens of thousands...”

Why doesn’t he just come out and say that the sun sets in the east and we never landed on the moon while he’s at it. It always cracks me up when leftists just throw a lie out there as if it is a commonly known thing to be true. I suppose when you live your life in the leftist bubble, you start believing that all the bullchit you believe is just common knowledge accepted by everyone - until you leave the bubble and see actual election results.

The shocking loss was to the Democrats, with their ballot harvesting.

I’ve been in IT since 1983. I’ve worked with a lot of them. Because so much of my work is consulting, I’ve worked in 18 companies. There is usually one “queen bee” in every shop. She is the scary one with way too much hubris and scary political power. And being a woman, is untouchable, politically.

One of my biggest successes in my career was being constantly attacked by one and, due to my always calm and level headed response, causing her to quit, much to the cheers of the men on site (she really hated men and was quite vindictive).

But not all women are like that.

This dunce wrote “Trump’s brazen mishandling has led to the deaths of tens of thousands” while totally ignoring the facts. It wasn’t Trump that mandated that the elderly with the virus be placed in nursing homes instead of hospitals which led to the deaths of thousands. But the governor of NY certainly did. That same governor grossly over estimated the number of hospital beds he would need, thus causing the deployment of a hospital ship to NYC and the construction of at least two temporary hospitals that weren’t needed. As for hospital ships, the governor of CA did the same mistake. Where exactly did the tens of thousands of deaths happen for the most part? In cities and states that have been under the control of Democrats for the past many decades. This writer must think that we Americans have the word stupid tattooed on our foreheads for all to see. Well, we don’t and we recognize propaganda when we see it.

Any decent editor would have sent this first-year journalism student back to the drawing board to edit out his biased language.

But all MSM editors have become Leninist political officers.
