The Memo: Five Republicans who could primary Trump in 2020
The Hill ^ | 12-27-2017 | Niall Stanage

Will President Trump face a challenge from within his own party in 2020?

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake (R) seems to think so. On Sunday, Flake told ABC’s “This Week” that if the president did not change his approach, he “is going to leave a huge swath of voters looking for someone else.”

Flake, a frequent Trump critic, added that the president is “probably inviting a Republican challenge.” Any challenger to Trump would face enormous hurdles.

The president remains popular among Republican voters, even as he endures historically low approval numbers at large. In most polls, around 80 percent of GOP voters give Trump the thumbs-up.

Still, Trump would become much more vulnerable if Republicans suffered major losses in the midterm elections set for November 2018.

And it’s easy to see why some of his most strident GOP critics might think it’s worthwhile to run against him, even if victory is a long-odds bet.

But who is most likely to do it?

LOL....because Kasich proved to have so much traction last time around. [/s]

Honestly, this whole list is a joke. Cruz is the most viable, but he will probably wait to run again until Trump leaves office.

Ha...President Donald J. Trump (ILWT) will chew them up and spit them out without breaking a sweat...and Cruz is not eligible.

(ILWT = I Love Writing That)

I don’t think Ted Cruz will ever be president.

Was there this sort of talk going on in late 1981, early 1982 concerning Reagan? Were the GOPe back then thinking of challenging Reagan with some moderate RINO type?

Senators are RARELY ever elected to the Presidency, and typically are criminals...

The last two senators to become POTUS:

Barack ‘Muhammed’ Obama

John ‘Son of a Criminal’ Kennedy.

That covers the last 66 years...

Sasse and Kasich are possibilities. Sasse might realistically be setting himself up for 2024. Kasich just for vanity and vindication. Sasse will get Bill Bradley type numbers between 10 & 30% depending on state, if he runs a competent campaign.

Corker and Flake are not going anywhere. Flake barely registers in double digits in Arizona! Corker ran a pretty raw campaign against Harold Ford last time around, making him completely ineligible to attack Trump on campaigning style. Corker can’t win, and he cannot beat the pack in 2024.

Cruz made as much peace as he could with Trump, and is young enough to make a run in 2024 against Pence and a straight-RINO.

Yes, I do have thoughts on this. DJT is at his absolute best when fighting political hacks in the arena of an election. I’d pay good money to watch him destroy any or all of the walking cadaver mentioned in the article.

Flake told ABC’s “This Week” that if the president did not change his approach, he “is going to leave a huge swath of Marxist’s and Communist sympathizers looking for someone else.”

there, fixed it.

Agreed.

The republican party will lose to the Democrats if they nominate him.

I don't believe there's any chance whatsoever that Cruz will make a primary challenge - Trump is doing most of what Cruz would have tried to do had he become president. There's no real disagreement on policy and Cruz has behaved pretty maturely in realizing that and working with Trump in the Senate, unlike guys like Flake.

I think it'd be hilarious if Flake actually made a primary attempt - he'd certainly get backing from the Bill Kristol/George Will types, but he'd lose. Badly.

The Trump Presidency has been successful in Year one.At the end of Obama's presidency, there were "0" successes in any category....only illegal executive orders...like DACA.

If Martinez ran, it would be a symbolic gesture, or tryintg to be VP in 2024. Risky maneuver with limited upside.
