Diagnosing the state of President Donald Trumps political health should be a simple matter. The story that the traditional metrics tell is straightforward.
On a good day for him, Trumps approval rating might crack 40 percent. But a more typical day lately will put him in the mid- to high-30s, while the worst day, so far, had him plunging to 33 percent. Since his inauguration, Trumps approval in Gallups daily tracker has never exceeded 46 percent, and he only hit that number once during his first week on the job.
By any historical standard, these numbers are politically catastrophic. And maybe thats just what they are.
What complicates them, though, is how Trump became president in the first place.
Recall some of the dire polling he faced as a candidate. More than 60 percent of voters didnt think he was qualified to be president; not even 20 percent thought he had the temperament and personality to serve; more than half of Republicans said they werent satisfied with him as their nominee. On Election Day, 60 percent of the electorate said it didnt like him.
By any historical standard, these were also politically catastrophic numbers, and yet, well, Trump is in the White House. In 2016, the numbers didnt mean quite what we thought they did.
As narratives of collapse take shape around Trumps presidency now, the campaign should at least serve as a cautionary tale. It may look like his base is crumbling and maybe it is or maybe were living through a new version of what happened last year.
Consider the newest round of NBC polling from the three states that put Trump over the top.....

According to the polls on Election Day Hillary was going to be President...
They lie.
AND we don’t talk to pollsters.
The first problem I see is that NBC is doing the polling. As I understand it, they are, and have been, in a contest to see which one can pump out the most fake news. Why would I believe ANYTHING from NBC; or BUY ANYTHING from their advertisers?
Yup. In 15 years a pollster has never called me
Typical pollster liar. Nothing new here. I just took a poll of a few of my friends. The result is that 100% say this pollster is a fraud and a lunatic.
>>By any historical standard, these numbers are
...meaningless in American current events.
We have the polarization you normally find in a Third World country that hasn’t found a dictator yet. Basically, one side is trying to find a dictator, but the election didn’t give her to them. We also have an Elite class of political and business nobility who support the people on the political spectrum who hate them more than they support the people who work and produce.
And then we have the wording of polls, the manipulation of the statistics, and the dishonest journalists who report the “results”.
I’m surprised that he can have double digit approval numbers with all that allied against him.
The only way Trump can collapse in the polls is if his base abandons him. Everybody else was already claiming they wouldn’t vote for him. So ask yourself if Trump has lost his base. If he hasn’t, you know they are fudging the numbers.
Black out.
Noticeable that FOX, CNN and MNBC now cut off the press briefings of the State Department. FOX Biz used to cover the full briefing without fail. Now, they too have joined in on cutting off the Secretary, and his fabulous spokeswoman, after opening remarks.
The State Dept briefings are a case study in professionalism and in distribution of information and perfectly controlled Q&A.
Burns me up they all cut to the emoting of the same old talking heads rather than informing their viewers with live coverage of huge issues.
Keeping us ignorant lowers Trump’s poll numbers and aids in keeping the base stirred up and arguing on details they missed in the briefing.
Trump is embargoed and so are his department heads.
The reason Trump supporters polled lower on election day had nothing to do with Comey's late 'announcement, or Seth Rich's email dump, or Clinton being 'establishment'... It had to do with THE SAME REASON WE DON'T PUT TRUMP STICKERS ON OUR CARS OR TRUMP SIGNS IN FRONT OF OUR HOMES.
FEAR.
Before the election a friend accidentally 'outed' a college professor who's wife was a friend. He was sickened by being outed (just to one person) but feared the social shunning and contempt that would accompany his outing... All of us have stories - keyed cars - subtle threats... not so subtle threats...shunning.
NO ONE who's still supporting a family should risk telling a stranger on a phone that they're supporting President Trump.
6 in 10 people who approve of Trump say they’ll never, ever, ever stop approving

I take it you don’t live in a swing state... Am I right?
These polling numbers carry as much value as the unemployment number the BLS keeps reporting and the media keeps repeating. Both measuring systems need to get into the 21st century. And the measuring people need to get outside their bubbles and live in the real world.
Were they polling the same 10 rabid Democrats that gave 0bama his 57% rating as he was out the door?
This stuff is so insane.
Voter records are public information. How about asking the 62 MILLION of us that voted for him and made him POTUS, versus those loser leftist college kids that live in Gallup’s basement?
*SNORT*
They stopped the daily briefing, and even had briefings without cameras.
That’s why you don’t see them.
Not really a great sign.
;-)
People’s republic of Minnesota. But I lived in the 6th last election. That was rather contested.
Phone polling does not work.
The last two State Dept press conferences were interrupted.
Today they darted off on the Secretary of State, himself, before he got started.
He was smoothly speaking on breaking news, reporting reactions abroad to the US strategy and behind the scene cooperation, when yappy Trish Regan ripped away cameras from him in mid-sentence to pontificate her repiticious screed.
I knew the White House briefing is a collosal flop with mopey Huckabee slouching through a careless speed read of the president’s agenda. They need to move the FOX talent in the slot from her remarkable spokeswoman job at State.
