After graduating high school moved to Los Angeles, worked in a garment factory, as a telephone operator, and an assistant teacher with Head Start.

Graduated with a degree in sociology from Los Angeles State College, now California State University Los Angeles.

Member of California Assembly from 1977 - 1991.

Member of U.S. Congress from 1991 to present and former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Co-founded Black Women’s Forum and Community Build.

Married twice, two children.

Our neighbor in Southern California when I was a child was a Head Start teacher because she had been on welfare. Wonder if the same is true of Maxine Waters?

I'm not sure if they have indexed all of CSPAN videos going back this far but - ol' Maxine was on during one segment, perhaps a decade ago, addressing a gathering of Mothers Against Mandatory Minimums. I am shidding you negative on that, there is such a group. Instead of feeling shame for having raised a child that is in the criminal justice system, these folks organize to rant and rave against perceived sentencing unfairness. And Maxine was there imparting wisdom to the crowd. When you stumble across something like that you just stall out, slack jawed in disbelief. If the Democrats want to be identified with someone like her, bring it on.

Her predecessor in Congress, Gus Hawkins, who was also a Communist, lived to 100. Look at Jimmuh Carter who is almost 93.
