I don't understand why they do the former, considering they do the latter.

You bet it is. And of course our media won’t report on the near-zero success rate of brokered nominees in the last 100 years until AFTER we get to the brokered convention.
Because if they reported it now, voters might actually wise up and realize their choices are Trump or Hillary. That’s it. In addition, if we avoided a brokered convention, the media would lose out on all the revenues surrounding n historic brokered convention.
