Summer is over. And Donald Trump is -- still -- at the top of the 2016 Republican primary field.
That makes lots and lots of Republicans with an eye on winning the White House in 2016 (or even 2020) very, very nervous. That unease -- and its origins -- are explained brilliantly in this paragraph, taken from a broader piece entitled "The GOP is Killing Itself," by former Bush administration official Pete Wehner:
The message being sent to voters is this: The Republican Party is led by people who are profoundly uncomfortable with the changing (and inevitable) demographic nature of our nation. The GOP is longing to return to the past and is fearful of the future. It is a party that is characterized by resentments and grievances, by distress and dismay, by the belief that America is irredeemably corrupt and past the point of no return. “The American dream is dead,” in the emphatic words of Mr. Trump.
Wehner, whose honesty and insight about his party and its prospects I've praised before in this space, nails a sentiment I've heard expressed by countless Republicans in the Summer of Trump. The concern is that a candidate like Trump is running a campaign based on the 1980 electorate, not the 2016 one....

The Republican primary voters are people who are profoundly indifferent to demographics. We believe in the rule of law, which is why we oppose illegal immigration. But we also believe all government actions should be race-blind, which is why we oppose government-mandated affirmative action. We are the people whom MLK was talking about in his “I have a dream,” speech, and the democrats are still the ones fighting against that dream.
It’s a power issue for both the Dems and GOPe, so Trump better have good security to avoid you know what IMO.

Trump hasn’t declared it dead.
If it’s moribund it’s only because democrats have tried their best to kill it.
If anyone is in a panic it’s the liberal leadership, because

Chris got a whiff of some journalistic integrity and some relative insight in an article or two over the past few days but has been sucked right back onto the liberails of the leftist express.
Bush was a huge globalist.

Right, that's why Trump is got 31% of Hispanics and 25% of blacks in a recent general election matchup vs. Hillary. How many did Romney get? McCain?
The party long to return to the days where the country club Republicans were happy to go along with the Rats and be invited to the cocktail parties.

The Wapo didn’t like the 1980 electorate either.
If the GOP kills itself, it will be a result of rejecting Trump, not embracing him.
