DAVENPORT, Iowa Rand Paul would notch a big victory in Washington just after midnight Monday if he follows through on his promise to block the renewal of the anti-terrorism law used to justify domestic spying programs.
But back in Iowa, where Paul has tried to use the issue in recent days to revive his struggling presidential campaign, many Republican voters have responded with unease.
Even some who stood in line to see Paul as he traveled the state last week said that they simply could not agree with his argument that the National Security Agencys bulk data collection was an unreasonable invasion of privacy.
If youre not doing anything wrong, what are you worried about? said Tom Charlton, 64, a retired sales training manager for a tire company, who was first in line at a book signing with Paul in Davenport. If this can stop one attack, its worth infringing on legal citizens rights.(continued)

Iowa has some of its roots in the Midwestern Farm Socialism that infected the plains at the turn of the 20th Century.
The WaPo says we are all happy with the govt spying on us?? What a surprise!

I thought the good people of Iowa loved liberty. I stand corrected.
May your chains set lightly upon you...
Spoken like a good little German. Guess we don't need any rights anymore, government will never target anyone but the guilty.
It’s truly unbelievable.
Personally, I think the bulk of the outrage is really directed at who is collecting the information and what controls are in place so it isn’t abused. When the leadership is literally a bunch of psychopathic liars, and will accept no oversight they’ve ruined any trust.
Any damage and blame because of a lack of collection in the futures will fall squarely on the shoulders of the collectors who abused their responsibility.
Why do you think Christian Socialists like Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum are so popular there?
The bulk collection of phone records is ending anyway (I think) so Rand may be on firmer ground when he can take credit for that.
yeah, but those are not GOP voters...the GOP voters in Iowa nervous about Paul’s stance are A: hard core Christian conservatives worried about terror and Islam and B: normal national defense hawk type conservatives.
Let me make clear ... I can not STAND Rand Paul.
Haven’t said that, those Iowa GOPers need to get a clue. NSA domestic spying is on the road to fascism.
You actually believe that? Hahahahahaha!
Thank GOD I no longer live in that state of Iowa which is nothing but a bunch of Idiots Out Walking Around!
Here's the problem for that moron: The NSA, FBI, CIA cannot point to a SINGLE Terrorist attack that's been stopped by infringing on our liberties.
NOT ONE, and they were asked if it had. Not one single government agency in charge of our security at any level could point to a single event spying on all of us stopped.
So if this guy Tom Charlton wants HIS rights infringed I'm all for that, just leave my rights the hell alone you MORON!
I pray to God that Rand Paul manages to block that evil POS legislation from getting extended. It needs to be scrapped completely and replaced by common sense. Oh wait that doesn’t exist in the House or Senate. Nevermind.
that quote has to be fake, maybe the guy is just trolling
or...are there really people that stupid? I guess I know the answer
It may not work to his advantage this election cycle but the presence or absence of data collection is not a pressing matter to most people and I do think they will be more accepting of his position with time. And of course not another major terrorist attack God willing...
Any newspaper that has been, or still is, a, ahem,
house organ, must still prove it’s worthiness to
the presiding gang of thieves that allow it to exist.
I suspect these ‘GOP voters’, to have one clay foot.
As with any survey, you keep going till you have
sufficient numbers to support the slant of the article.
I did. I just don’t give a rat’s bazoo what the voters of Iowa think. I also care not if Rand Paul’s candidacy fails. We need him in the Senate fighting for our rights. Everybody can’t be President. The Iowa straw poll is meaningless anyway.
The evil legacy of 911 is the Patriot Act and the formation of the DHS/. Both need to be nuked from outer space.
