Ted Cruz supports unlimited campaign contributions — something no politician actually says
The Washington Post's The Fix Blog ^ | March 16, 2015 | Hunter Schwarz

Ted Cruz said something this weekend you will basically never hear a politician say: Unlimited campaign contributions are good.

At a Republican event in New Hampshire on Sunday, the Texas senator said free speech means everyone "has a right to speak out in politics as effectively as possible" -- whether that means putting a sign in your yard or donating money. And last year, he proposed eliminating direct political contribution limits.

While Republicans generally favor rolling back campaign finance laws, few talk in these terms. And that's because the vast majority of Americans support some limits. An October CBS News poll found that 80 percent believe outside group spending on political advertising should be limited, while 76 percent believe individual contributions should also be limited.

So why would Cruz support something so deeply unpopular? The truth is, while voters say they care about money in politics, it's not a high-priority issue, and very few actually vote on it....

The ultra-rich can spend as much of their own money as they want. Mitt Romney, anyone?

I agree with him. But there must be complete disclosure so the public knows who owns whom. I have been the recipient of placards on Facebook that show 4 Republican Senators dressed as race car drivers with the supporting corporation’s patches on their jumpsuits. Why no Democrats in the picture?? It is put out by a Dem organization......I have been able to get a few Libs admit that Dems actually receive MORE MONEY than Pubbies, but the Dems have the Media’s buly pulpit to obfuscate the issue. And most Libs are either ignorant or just plain stupid when it comes to their own sins.

Money is a proxy for human effort, free speech is effort, therefore ther freedom to give as much as you want to a political campaign is free speech.

And Obama’s folks can launder money through international donations from pre-paid credit cards because the pre-paid cards are below the reportable limit...

I am more and more convinced everyday that the squealing FROM BOTH SIDES for campaign finance reform (McCain Feingold anyone) came about due to the establishment crapping a brick over the sudden appearance of Ross Perot in 1992, he was proof that third party anti-establishment populist could grab and gain considerable traction. They wanted to find a way to prevent this in the future.

Also look at the IRS harassment of the tea party.

Don’t like unlimited contributions, but I love his idea of getting rid of all the PACs and demanding full disclosure (which they conveniently forgot to include).

Yep. That is ostensibly why the Obama Regime didn’t have to report all those foreign donations in 2008.......they SAID they were all under $200. And Big Media let them skate!

As long as we go after politicians that introduce and/or vote on legislation that directly affects their corproate contributers, I have no problem with it. Go after the corruption, not the speech.

This would lend itself to the thinking that perhaps Cruz would also be against term limits? Same thinking, anyhow. Free speech includes the right to send someone to DC as many times as you like, right?

Totally agree. Complete and total disclosure and then let the chips fall where they may.

Unlimited contributions are fine, with one stipulation. All contributions must be ANONYMOUS. If the candidates/officeholders don’t know who the donor is, they can’t sell their influence. But the donor may support the candidate he believes will act in his best interest, to any extent he chooses. That’s FREEDOM.

So why would Cruz support something so deeply unpopular?

Because he's principled, which is something entirely alien to most of the political class.
